Lauryn Hill Responds To Tax Evasion Charges

NEWARK, N.J. -- Reclusive singer Lauryn Hill said in an Internet posting Friday that she hasn't paid taxes since she withdrew from society to guarantee the safety and well-being of herself and her family.

The eight-time Grammy Award winner and South Orange, N.J., resident was charged this week with willfully failing to file income tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service. Federal prosecutors said she didn't pay taxes on more than $1.5 million earned in 2005, 2006 and 2007 from recording and film royalties.

Hill responded to the federal charges in a lengthy post on her Tumblr page Friday. She described how she has rejected pop culture's "climate of hostility, false entitlement, manipulation, racial prejudice, sexism and ageism."

"Over-commercialization and its resulting restrictions and limitations can be very damaging and distorting to the inherent nature of the individual," Hill wrote. "I did not deliberately abandon my fans, nor did I deliberately abandon any responsibilities, but I did however put my safety, health and freedom and the freedom, safety and health of my family first over all other material concerns! I also embraced my right to resist a system intentionally opposing my right to whole and integral survival."

She said in her online post that she explained herself to authorities when she was questioned by authorities about her failure to pay taxes.

"My intention has always been to get this situation rectified. When I was working consistently without being affected by the interferences mentioned above, I filed and paid my taxes," she wrote. "This only stopped when it was necessary to withdraw from society, in order to guarantee the safety and well-being of myself and my family."

The U.S. Attorney's Office for New Jersey, which filed the tax charges, didn't comment on Hill's statements Friday.

The 37-year-old Hill got her start with the Haitian-American hip-hop band the Fugees. She began her solo career in 1998 with the critically acclaimed album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill."

Oracle pushed Google hard enough in court to be ordered to pay part of Google?s legal fees

The Google-Oracle trial is over ? Oracle can?t restrict Google from using parts of Java they alleged the latter were wrongly infringing on, and they also can?t enforce a license. Judge Alsup made that perfectly clear. But something interesting was revealed about Oracle?s strategy: they pushed way too hard for a lawsuit that pretty much wasted the court?s time.

After two failed revisions of their trial, Alsup made Oracle adhere to one condition if they wanted to get back into the courtroom: that they pay for Google?s legal fees for that third trial. The damages come in at about $300,000, an amount that seems like pocket change even for Oracle.

Earlier in this trial?s history, Google called Oracle?s claims?frivolous, and they should have taken heed of that in a serious manner. With this move, Alsup made it clear that Oracle is not going to get anywhere with such a weak hand, and that they should think twice before making themselves look like fools in front of the entirety of the tech world. Understanding complex relationships: How global properties of networks become apparent locally

ScienceDaily (June 7, 2012) ? From infections spreading around the globe to the onset of an epileptic seizure in the brain: Many phenomena can be seen as the effects of network activity. Often it is vitally important to understand the properties of these networks. However, they are often too complex to be described completely. Scientists from the Bernstein Center at the University of Freiburg were now able to show how global features of complex networks can be discovered in local statistical properties -- which are much more accessible for scientific investigation. The researchers were able to benefit from the high-performance computing facilities of the Bernstein Center, which are normally used to simulate the activity of nerve cells in the brain.

In an article appearing in the scientific journal PLoS ONE, Stefano Cardanobile and colleagues describe how they analysed 200,000 networks which they generated in a computer -- using models that are employed by scientists to understand the properties of naturally occurring networks. The researchers compared the results obtained from these models with well-understood networks from the real world: the metabolism of a bacterium, the relationship of synonyms in a thesaurus, and the nervous system of a worm. Thus, they were able to assess which model networks can predict the behaviour of its real-life counterpart the best. These insights can help colleagues from other fields to choose the right model in their specific research.

Most importantly, the scientists from Freiburg could demonstrate that it is possible to draw conclusions about global properties of complex networks from local statistical data. This means that one can discover important properties of networks even if they are not completely analysed -- very often an impossible task in large systems such as human social contacts or connections in the brain. Therefore, the authors see their study to represent an important step towards a better understanding of complex networks.
