South Africa's Zuma boosted by Ramaphosa return in ANC win

BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa | Tue Dec 18, 2012 11:18am EST

BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa (Reuters) - South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) re-elected President Jacob Zuma as its leader on Tuesday, setting him up for seven more years as head of state of Africa's biggest economy.

Nelson Mandela's 100-year-old liberation movement also chose respected businessman Cyril Ramaphosa as his deputy, seeking to repair the image of a Zuma administration battered by corruption scandals and strikes and facing growing discontent among the poor black majority.

More than 4,000 ANC delegates crammed into a marquee in the central city of Bloemfontein erupted into wild cheers when Zuma was confirmed in the top party post after comfortably seeing off a challenge by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe.

Given the ANC's dominance at the ballot-box less than two decades after the end of apartheid, 70-year-old Zuma is virtually assured a second, five-year term as President of South Africa in 2014 elections.

The rand briefly edged higher against the dollar, reflecting relief among investors at the prospect of policies remaining largely unchanged.

After the vote, the beaming president, who secured 2,995 votes out of 3,977 cast, walked on stage to shake hands with his fellow 'comrades' - a label reflecting the ANC's roots in the communist-backed struggle against decades of white-minority rule.

Zuma, a polygamous Zulu traditionalist, came to power in 2009 amid the first recession in 18 years and has had a chequered economic record, culminating in violent labor unrest in the mines this year that triggered two downgrades in South Africa's credit ratings.

He has also been dogged by personal scandals, including fathering a child by the daughter of a close friend. Despite this, his popularity within the party is overwhelming.

"I don't care what people say about Jacob Zuma," said Sinovuyo Kley, a delegate from the impoverished Eastern Cape. "When you hear him sing, you know he is one with the people. He speaks our language and knows our struggles."

RAMAPHOSA RETURNS

Zuma's re-election had looked likely for much of the year, making the main talking point of the five-day Bloemfontein conference the political renaissance of Ramaphosa after a decade-long absence to focus on his business interests.

Attention was also diverted by the arrest of four whites on suspicion of a plot to bomb the meeting and execute Zuma and top ministers as part of a plan to carve an independent Afrikaner state out of Mandela's "Rainbow Nation".

Having risen to prominence as a charismatic union leader in the 1980s, Ramaphosa became the ANC's main negotiator in the talks that led to historic all-race elections in 1994 and Mandela's appointment as South Africa's first black president.

He was also tipped as a successor to the revered Mandela - now 94 and recovering in hospital from a lung infection - but gradually removed himself from politics when the job went to party stalwart Thabo Mbeki in 1999.

It was unclear just how much impact Ramaphosa's inclusion in Zuma's inner circle could have on the ANC government.

Some analysts say he should help push through plans to lift long-term economic growth and stop South Africa's competitive slide against fast-growing economies in Asia and South America.

However, others who know his business style told Reuters he tended not to throw his weight around in company board-rooms, suggesting he might avoid challenging South Africa's politically powerful unions.

"He is surprisingly quiet and non-confrontational on boards," one person who knows Ramaphosa said.

Others suggest that his ranking as South Africa's second richest black businessman could limit his appeal to the legions of poor and jobless who are increasingly doubting the ANC's post-apartheid promise to deliver "a better life for all".

LOOMING DOWNGRADE

"Looking further ahead, we remain doubtful that Zuma can oversee the reforms needed to pull the South African economy out of its current rut," said Shilan Shah, Africa economist at UK-based Capital Economics.

There is precious little time to make an impact, with Fitch expected in January to follow Moodys and Standard & Poor's in cutting South Africa's credit rating because of concerns about sluggish growth, forecast at 2.5 percent this year.

"The leadership issue is never really decisive for the market," said Nomura emerging markets analyst Peter Attard-Montalto. "It's always interested in policy and that's far more what the ratings agencies are looking at."

Zuma may also find his Bloemfontein victory dance cut short, with a poll published this week putting his nationwide approval rating at 52 percent, in contrast to 70 percent for the outgoing Motlanthe. This reflects just how much the internal politics of the ruling ANC is insulated from daily realities.

The opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) is starting to make in-roads into ANC support at local and regional level despite its reputation among many black South Africans as the party of white privilege. The DA said it had been inundated with membership inquiries within an hour of Zuma being re-elected.

Even within his own party, young South Africans are snapping at Zuma's heels, demanding political and economic change for a generation that has little memory of apartheid but which remains at the sharp end of 25 percent unemployment.

"The young people of South Africa are tired of promises and need action for economic freedom in our lifetime," the ANC Youth League, which had backed Motlanthe, said in a statement.

Born in Kitwe and raised in Lusaka City, Tony Dalitso Phiri, rap alias ?Tony Grammz?, born on 28th January 1994 was interested in music at a very tender age. Nephew of singing sensation and Idols Zambia winner Tasila Mwale, Grammz was exposed to various genres of music as he grew up. Showing great passion for Rap, Hip Hop and Rock music, he learnt how to play guitar and is currently perfecting this fine art. During the year 2009 in his tenth grade, he met aspiring Rap Artist Collins ?Krisn-I? Nzovu and together they shared their passion for conscious Rhythm and Poetry. They performed at school organised variety shows and various music related functions, writing and composing their own songs. Krisn-I introduced Grammz to the So? Good Entertainment crew at their Rap and Hip Hop Expo known as the Cypher +260 in the year 2010. This was held at St. Paul?s Secondary school where he charmed the crowd and the So? Good management with his rap skill. At another Cypher held later that year, he proved himself once again and begun to talk about being signed to So? Good with one of So?Good managers Chifumbe ?Beretta? Sikazweh. A couple of months later after mainly popularizing all So? Good music and

A Few Reasons Why You?d Want To Download All Of Your Tweets

2912634902_694094fa84_zToday, we learned that Twitter made good on its promise to start letting its users download all of their tweets from the beginning of their history with the service. For many geeks, there is excitement about this. It means that Twitter is showing how truly “open” they can be when it comes to your data and information, finally catching up with companies like Facebook and Google, which both allow you to grab all of your information at any time. But some are confused about what they might do with the data once they have it? As with any data, the why’s and what’s are without boundaries. It’s pretty much infinite what you can do with a bazillion tweets that you own, well some have less than others. The first thing you should do once you get the ability to download your archived tweets is to do so immediately. It won’t take up too much space on your hard-drive. If you really care about the time you’ve spent on Twitter, why not back the massive file up on a service like Google Drive, Dropbox or Box? It certainly can’t hurt. Now that you have the data, what can be done with it? Well, the tools to do cool things with massive amounts of data aren’t readily available to consumers like you, but that’s changing quickly. Services like Gnip, who have firehose access to re-sell to marketers, should absolutely take this opportunity to create consumer-facing services. What would you do with your tweets? Here are some ideas: Visualizations We’re all familiar with the “cloud” presentation of data, meaning seeing what you tweet about the most by surfacing the most popular phrases and words. Yes, it’s all about you, but it’s mighty interesting, since you probably don’t even remember 10% of what you’ve tweeted over the years. Certain words and themes could permeate and remind you of past times or how far you’ve come along personally. A perfect example is that some folks, like myself, used to tweet about how dumb the service itself was. We would ask “What is this for?” over and over. Eventually, some of us answered that question by simply tweeting more. Over the years, the themes that we’ve tweeted about changed based on current events, personal situations, job changes and more. Imagine if you could structure this data in a way that tells the story of your life.

After landslide, Abe says Japan has difficult road

TOKYO (AP) ? After leading his conservative party to a landslide victory that will bring it back to power after a three-year hiatus, Shinzo Abe stressed Monday that the road ahead will not be easy as he tries to revive Japan's sputtering economy and bolster its national security amid deteriorating relations with China.

The Liberal Democratic Party, which led Japan for most of the post-World War II era until it was dumped in 2009, won 294 seats in the 480-seat lower house of parliament in Sunday's nationwide elections, the party said.

With the elections over, a vote among the members of parliament to install the new prime minister is expected on Dec. 26. Abe, who was prime minister for a year in 2006-2007, is almost certain of winning that vote because the LDP now holds the majority in the lower house.

Abe, who would be Japan's seventh prime minister in 6 1/2 years, will likely push for increased public works spending and lobby for stronger moves by the central bank to break Japan out of its deflationary trap.

Stock prices soared Monday to their highest level since April, reflecting hopes in the business world that the LDP will be more effective in its economic policies than the outgoing Democrats were.

Abe told a packed news conference Monday that Japan is facing a series of crises ? from the weak economy to security issues to reconstruction after the tsunami disaster.

"Our mission is to overcome these crises," he said.

He said his party's victory was less a vote of confidence from voters and more a repudiation of the "mistaken leadership" of the Democrats.

"The public will be scrutinizing us."

He said he would like to meet with President Barack Obama in late January or early February to strengthen the Japan-U.S. alliance.

Chinese bloggers, meanwhile, reacted with scorn to the LDP's victory, with many concentrating their fire on Abe, a China hawk. Chinese micro-blog sites Monday were full of anti-Abe comments, with some calling for a boycott of Japanese goods.

The countries are embroiled in a territorial dispute over a cluster of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea controlled by Japan but also claimed by China and Taiwan. During the two-week campaign leading up to the election, Abe took a rather tough line toward China, promising to defend Japan's "territory and beautiful ocean."

On Monday, Abe called for improved ties with Beijing while stressing the islands are an integral part of Japan's territory and that there was "no room for talks" over their sovereignty.

"As with many cases, issues arise with countries that share borders, and what is important is how each nation keeps these issues under control. I feel we need wisdom so that the political issues or problems do not extend to economic problems," he said.

"Although we are not in a situation where I can immediately visit China or have bilateral talks, first and foremost, we will persistently continue with our dialogue with China and hope to improve relations between the two countries," he said.

Outgoing Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda announced his resignation as party chief late Sunday, calling the election results "severe" and acknowledging his party failed to live up to the nation's high expectations.

His Democratic Party of Japan said it won only 57 seats. Among its casualties were eight Cabinet ministers ? the most to lose in an election since World War II.

Although the election was the first since the March 11, 2011, earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disasters, atomic energy ? which the LDP conditionally supports ? ended up being a side issue, though polls showed that about 80 percent of Japanese want to phase it out completely.

The LDP will stick with its longtime partner New Komeito, backed by a large Buddhist organization, to form a coalition government, party officials said. Together, they now control 325 seats, securing a two-thirds majority that would make it easier for the government to pass legislation.

A dizzying array of more than 12 parties, including several news ones, contested in the election, some with vague policy goals.

The most significant new force is the right-leaning, populist Japan Restoration Party, which won 54 seats.

The party is led by the bombastic nationalist former Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara and lawyer-turned Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto ? polarizing figures with forceful leadership styles. Ishihara is another hawk on China, having stirred up the latest dispute with Beijing by proposing Tokyo buy the islands from their private Japanese owners and develop them.

The anti-nuclear Tomorrow Party ? formed just three weeks ago ? captured only nine seats. Party head Yukiko Kada said she was very disappointed to see the LDP, the original promoter of Japan's nuclear energy policy, make such a big comeback.
