This Is My Yacht-(877) 2GO-LUXURY Luxury Cruising and Travel ...

We awoke to bright skies and, at least for me, great excitement.? I have wanted to visit the Cambodia temples for many years.? My anticipation was heightened by a comment made by Anthony Bourdain in his television show, ?No Reservations?, when he said that after visiting Angkor Wat he stopped taking photographs of his travels.? Why, I am not so sure.? One may not be able to capture the magnitude of something, but the small details can be compelling.? We shall see.
Our first day in Siem Reap was not, however, visiting Angkor Wat, but Angkor Thom.? It is very large temple complex devoted, for the most part, the Hindu religion. I say the most part because there is a very peaceful co-existence and melding of the Hindu and Buddhist religions. Carvings and faces everywhere cut into massive stones.? It really is not something that I can describe; so rather than not taking photographs I will let them provide the description.? To me there is a beauty and an essence that is compelling.

?

?But what is making this more compelling is our guide.? He speaks from his soul and has an amazing way of balancing his pain from the time of the Khmer Rouge, the complex political and economic issues, the cultural issues of dealing with so many nationalities and, of course, his present day personal life.? As I mentioned in another article, I will most definitely be writing a reflective piece after my journey here ends.? But one thing is for certain, those that have come here to tick off something on their Bucket List are cheating themselves.

Anyway, after Angkor Thom, we then briefly visited a number other temples and sights nearby, such as the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King

before visiting Baphoun Temple, which has a number of ficus trees both destroying and preserving the temple in what is clearly a tension between the jungle and the preservation/restoration of some incredible history.

Afterwards we returned to the Sofitel Angkor for an independent lunch.? However, since we started late (after our late arrival the night before) there was no time to venture into Siem Reap for a midday meal; a bit of a disappointment.? I say this because at this point I am feeling a little bit sanitized.? The hotel is beautiful and quite modern, but until you step outside the property the reality of how poor Cambodia is, on the one hand, and how rich its cultures are, on the other, really doesn?t have a chance to hit you.? That said, my feeling of needing more of Cambodia was quickly satiated.

?

In the afternoon we had our first somewhat rainy experience visiting an incredibly beautiful temple known as Bantrey Srei (the Citadel of Women), which has some of the most beautiful and detailed stone carvings I have ever seen?with some really phenomenal architectural elements.? Our guide said many times that the temple is more beautiful in the bright sun, but I found it breathtaking in the soft rain.

It was then time to leave the past and travel to the present?and, somewhat sullenly, the issues surrounding the poor education system in Cambodia; especially in the rural areas.?

AmaWaterways supports an English language school for young rural Cambodian children.? It is very understated in its efforts because, as it has been explained to me, there is a delicate balance between doing what is right (by giving back) and appearing to be charitable solely because it is a good marketing ploy.? To be sure, AmaWaterways clearly is doing this for the right reasons.? It only suggests?if you read all the materials sent to you?that you bring some school supplies to donate.? AmaWaterways does not ask for donations of money and, honestly, it is so discrete, I would not have a clue how to make one. So when you visit it is totally about the children.? (Compare Silversea automatically adding a monetary donation to your onboard account for a charity that you never visit or have any other involvement with?and then you have to ask to have it removed if you do not want to donate; something I have been overtly critical of.)

I enjoyed talking with the children, spending a few moments with as many of them as I could helping the practice their English.? From the beaming smiles, to the sheepish looks, to the class clowns, our brief 20 minute visit went by so quickly; ending with them singing a song in English with so much pride and so many smiles that you had to feel great.?

There was an included dinner at the hotel with a Cambodian dance troupe.? I observed that most in our group really enjoyed it.? But for me it was just not as an authentic experience as I would have liked.? Again, it is a balance sort of thing.? (If I was to do this trip again, I would skip the dinner and headed into Siem Reap for a local dinner.)

I awoke the next morning with threatening skies just begging to ruin my visit to Angkor Wat.? With raincoats and umbrellas in my backpack we headed off?and the skies brightened and the temperature rose.? And the temple is everything it is cracked up to be.? It is architecturally impressive and far grander than any camera lens can capture.? The relatively short time we spent at Angkor Wat just didn?t seem enough, but the heat and the attention span of our children said, it was.? (AmaWaterways makes it very clear that you can spend less time or stay later?even return at your leisure?via a $5 tuk-tuk ride; a rickshaw attached to a motorbike.)

Then, to the relief of my friends and family, it was an afternoon of decompression and relaxation by the pool.? It really struck me that, as I sipped my mojito in the whirlpool, that I could be anywhere in the world.? While somewhat frustrating for me, when planning a tour for a group, the art of compromise is oh so important.? But not to worry!

After everyone was refreshed it was time to head into Siem Reap and its famous Pub Street and Night Market.? We decided to try an upscale Cambodian restaurant named AHA and the surreal contrasts I have been experiencing deepened.? While I dined on a three plate tapas sort of affair that, while truly some culinary art and ?included snake for $9.00, I could have walked out the door and literally less than 50 feet down the road purchased and entire dinner for $2.00.? In the end, our dinner was quite expensive?too expensive?but very good.? But then the polish wore off a bit when the phone lines went down and we were scrounging for cash because they could not process my credit card.

And then the shopping began.? Beautiful shawls for $1.50.? A very nice ceramic Buddha for $12.00.? Varying quality jade, t-shirts, etc.? Fish massages (where they eat the allegedly dead skin off your feet) for $2.00. Street food.? And tuk-tuk drivers hawking rides.? It was a lot of fun and a great way to end our time in Siem Reap?finally getting out of our bubble and also being refreshed after a fairly hectic itinerary so far.

Tomorrow we board the AmaLotus after a 5? hour drive.? I wonder what we will see along the way.

Driving Nails Smoothly with the Rolair JC10 Air Compressor

Rolair's compressors are still American-made, and it is interesting to see how they match up against the foreign competition. Though they are slightly on the heavy side for lightweight, portable compressors for construction finishing, workshops, and home repairs, they are also very sturdy and well made. A case in point is the Rolair JC10 Super Quiet 1HP Oil Less 2.5 Gallon Air Compressor whose sleek cylindrical design, unique protective roll-cage, and glossy dark green finish are quite eye-catching.

There is much more to the JC10 than eye candy, however ? this compressor can handle any task that you care to throw at it, up to about middle difficulty, with style and smoothness. The 2.5 gallon tank is not as voluminous as some pancake tanks, but it has much more than the minimal 1 gallon tanks found in some small compressors. There is some downtime while the tank periodically refills, but this only to be expected from a small compressor.

Reports demonstrate that this machine works well in practice, and not merely in theory. It cannot be used for major framing projects, but it reliably drives nails through 2? thick oak planks and handles lighter tasks such as finishing nails and brads with ease. With a universal coupler built in, you can attach any light to medium pneumatic accessory, for cutting, drilling, cleaning, inflating tires, or whatever other tasks are confronting you.

The machine shuts off at 125 psi and automatic filling begins at 100 psi. 1/8? and 1/4? lines can both be used by fitting an adapter to the coupler, though the device operates only one tool at a time.

The Rolair JC10 stands up to plenty of use and perhaps even a bit of abuse as well.

The roll cage that surrounds it provides convenient handles for carrying it in several different ways, but it also means that the compressor can survive falling over or even a short fall onto a hard surface.

It's best not to try this out, of course, but the roll cage adds an extra line of defense to keep your machine in working order. On top of this, the design is tight, compact, and uses sturdy engineering and materials to make a lasting, tenacious device that will serve you for a long time.

Satisfied customers speak glowingly of how quiet the Rolair JC10 is compared to other small air compressors, which are notorious for raising an earsplitting din while operating. The loudest sound produced by this implement is 60 decibels, roughly equivalent to people talking or a piano playing. By comparison, traffic from inside a car with the windows rolled up is 85 decibels. This means it can be used around other people without annoying them, and spares your ears long-term sound damage, too.

What makes the quietness of the Rolair JC10 even more noteworthy is that its operation is oil-less ? you need never add lubricants to the engine (though naturally, the air filter needs to be changed occasionally). This frees from you from an extra maintenance chore and also eliminates the risk of getting oil stains soaking into fresh hardwood flooring, or some other ghastly accident.

For light to medium tasks, the Rolair JC10 compressor is hard to beat. With pressure and air volume suitable to everything from nail driving (15 gauge and 18 gauge nails are ideal) to tire inflation to light pain spraying, this 38 pound, highly portable air compressor would already be great to have at your side on the job or in the workshop. Add in its rugged all-American build, its hushed operation, and the oil-less convenience of its design, and you have a clear winner among small air compressors able to handle medium jobs.

Key to burning fat faster discovered

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? Enzymes involved in breaking down fat can now be manipulated to work three times harder by turning on a molecular switch recently observed by chemists at the University of Copenhagen. Being able to control this chemical on/off button could have massive implications for curing diseases related to obesity including diabetes, cardio vascular disease, stroke and even skin problems like acne. But the implications may be wider.

Possibly the most important discovery in enzymology

The results suggest that the switch may be a common characteristic of many more enzymes. Since enzymes are miniscule worker-molecules that control a vast variety of functions in cells, if the switches are standard, it may well be one of the most important discoveries in enzymology.

"If many enzymes turn out to be switched on in the same way as the ones we've studied, this opens a door to understanding- and maybe curing, a wide range of diseases," says professor Dimitrios Stamou.

Stamou heads a multidisciplinary team of scientists at the Nanoscience Center and Department of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen who published their discovery in the scientific journal Journal of the American Chemical Society.

Switch contradicts previous understanding

The discovery of the enzymatic ignition key contradicts previous ideas of how cells control the function of enzymes such as the fat eating lipase used in the current study.

Researchers used to think that these enzymes work continuously at varying levels of efficiency. But in fact they are quite lazy. Very much like construction workers they work at a fixed efficiency for a given amount of time (working hours), and then they rest. And that's good news for enzyme designers.

Tripping their newfound switch resulted in tripling the working hours of lipase enzymes, from 15 percent of the time to 45 percent by the Copenhagen team.

Function follows form

In enzymes, function is decided by the shape of the molecule. So making them more efficient would have required a major reconstruction. In some cases so difficult that it is on the order of transforming a handsaw into a chainsaw, says the chemist, Assistant Professor Nikos Hatzakis, who was deeply involved in the scrutiny of the enzymes.

"Changing the fundamental shape of a tool is always difficult. Whether it's saw or an enzyme. But working longer hours with the same tool is infinitely easier. What we've achieved, is to make enzymes work longer hours" explains Hatzakis.

Scrutiny on the Nanoscale

Observing that enzymes even have an on-off switch may sound easy, but first the Bio Nano- team had to devise a way to study individual enzyme molecules. These are so small, that there are trillions in just a drop of water. So measuring the work of only one enzyme could be compared to looking down from the moon to detect each time a carpenter in a building in Copenhagen swings his hammer.

Light-emitting fat

To perform their studies the researchers chose a fat degrading lipase enzyme model system in collaboration with Danish industrial enzyme producer Novozymes.

They used "fat" that would emit light each time the enzyme took a bite. This way they could monitor each and every catalytic cycle or single movement of work. To ensure realism the enzymes were placed on an artificial cell wall. An "in vivo like membrane system," says Stamou.

"Natural enzymes live in cells. Looking at them in a non native environment, would tell us as much as looking at a carpenter working in outer space wearing a space suit would tell us about builders," explains Dimitrios Stamou and concludes:

"Now that we have understood how to switch enzymes on and off we could use this knowledge in the future both for curing diseases but also to design novel enzymes for industrial applications."

The research was supported by the Danish Research Councils and the Lundbeck foundation.

Japan's Copyright Problems: National Policies, ACTA, and TPP in the

Japan is yet another of many countries where Big Content is working closely with policymakers to enact expansive copyright laws in the name of fighting off threats to their profit bottom lines. In terms of copyright policy, it has been an especially big year for Japan.

In June, the Japanese government passed a new copyright bill that enacted criminal penalties for downloading, uploading, and simply viewing copyrighted materials. The bill also placed brand new restrictions on digital content, such as the criminalization of circumventing DRM on DVDs.

Anti-ACTA protesters in Japan, 2012. (Source: Wikicommons user Yves Tennevin / CC 2.5)

Prior to that, after years of supporting backroom negotiations for the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), Japan hosted the signing ceremony in Tokyo in December 2011. Despite its defeat in Europe, we have no reason to assume it has died. This is supported by the fact that it continues to inch its way through the Japanese legislature towards ratification. The coming threat is the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement, the international trade agreement that carries an intellectual property chapter that goes even farther than ACTAto restrict and criminalize sharing and accessing content.

Japan?s copyright laws have been growing more restrictive in and of themselves. Until recently, what was only illegal was the upload of unauthorized copyrighted content. In 2010, due to heavy lobbying from the Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers (JASRAC), the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology passed an amendment?despite huge opposition from the public?making unauthorized downloads illegal as well. These amendments, however, didn?t outline specific legal consequences for violations.

So in June of this year, again following pressure from the JASRAC and other Big Content interests, the Japanese government passed heavy penalties for infringement. Effective in October, a charge of copyright infringement could land a person prison for two years or fine them for up two million yen (about $25,400). In addition, the new law enacted an entirely new provision banning circumventing DRM on DVDs, even if it?s only for making a back-up copy of the disc. Already it seems that Japanese authorities are prematurely enforcing the latter provision: In mid-July, four employees of a publishing company, including its executive, were arrested for selling a guidebook explaining how to copy DVDs that included software to enable stripping DRM off of the discs. This is the first time in Japan arrests have ever been made of this kind. The Recording Industry Association of Japan went on to pressure ISPs to install spying technologies that will automatically block unauthorized uploads of copyrighted content.

In the same vein, the Japanese government has always been an avid supporter of ACTA, being the first to get on board with the US during negotiations and being further demonstrated by the fact that they had hosted the ACTA-signing ceremony last October. While they haven?t yet fully ratified the agreement, the Upper House of the Japanese legislature passed it almost unanimously [JP], and it is unclear when the vote in the Lower House will occur.

Despite wide governmental support for ACTA, the Japanese public is going on the defensive. Riding on public resentment towards the government?s nuclear energy policies, Japanese opposition against ACTA is growing quickly and substantially. Activists are also calling attention towards the TPP as a threat to their digital freedoms in light of increasing indication that Japan will join those negotiations.

Sites such as No TPP for Japan nor the World, Stop TPP!!, and a TPP resource page roughly translated as ?Even a Monkey Could Understand TPP? are just a few examples of Japanese language sites that have recently popped up advocating for opposition to these agreements. To a great extent, the language and awareness around their impact on digital freedoms draw inspiration from the successful anti-ACTA campaign in Europe. ?There are weekly anti-TPP rallies held every Tuesday in front of the Prime Minister?s office, and Anonymous Japan has called for a massive rally to take place at a large public park in Tokyo on September 9. As of this week, if one were to do a quick search of the hash tags #ACTA, #TPP, or #StopTPP, nearly half of the results yielded would be in Japanese. Here are a few translated tweets from activists from the last couple days:

@JapanAnon: ACTA. TPP. They will ban downloading. Japan will restrict its freedoms. Freedom of information is crucial to empowering the citizens. But Internet censorship only empowers multinational corporations and corrupt politicians. The mainstream media will not inform you about ACTA. That?s why you have to join us in standing against this!

@t_kawakami: It is a na?ve pretext to say ACTA is made to further fair trade. It is created for copyright enforcement, imposed on us by a gang of American lobbyists in the name of copyright enforcement. If we legitimize this global Internet policing system even once, then there will be nothing that can be done.

Lastly, this is a Twitter bio of a satirical account, in which the tweets are written by ACTA personified as an evil little girl:

@ACTA_chan: I pretend to crack down on counterfeit goods, but I?m secretly out to crush Internet freedom. If you don?t let the House of Representatives know soon, I promise to wreak havoc.

Possibly due to such growing opposition or to the recent party shift in the executive regime, Japan?s entry into TPP negotiations has become extremely politically charged. Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda of the Democratic Party of Japan has been facing substantial domestic pressure not to sign on to the agreement as while also facing heavy pressure from the US to join. Members of the Democratic Party have defected over Japan joining TPP, and more threaten to do the same.

TPP Protest in Tokyo, October 2011.(Source: Bionic Bong)

What underlie the politics are the powerful Japanese agricultural and industrial organizations who fear that joining TPP would undermine their jobs and access to markets. Such lobbyist groups even paid for a wrap ad in the Washington Postin April publicizing their opposition to the agreement in the United States. It is currently unclear whether Japan will in fact join TPP negotiations, but it is obvious that the US?and certain Japanese entertainment industries with strong ties with their US counterparts?are putting great pressure on the country get on board this disastrous agreement.

Restrictive copyright policies are not new to Japan. It?s clear however, that ACTA and TPP would further thrust them towards the dark path of copyright policymaking that will function to empower private corporate interests, intimidate Internet users, and freeze innovation?all to the detriment to social and economic progress. Fortunately, the Japanese people are taking notice and are quickly moving to action.

Insurer Aetna to buy Coventry in $5.7 billion deal

Aetna, one of the biggest U.S. health insurers, claimed a bigger stake in the burgeoning market for government-funded coverage Monday when it announced plans to buy a leading provider of Medicaid and Medicare coverage for $5.7 billion.

The Hartford, Connecticut, company's proposed acquisition of insurer Coventry Health Care will bolster its Medicaid business a few months before millions of people are expected to become eligible for the state- and federally-funded program for the needy and disabled under President Barack Obama's massive health care overhaul.

It also will boost the company's portion of business from the federally-funded Medicare program, which covers seniors over age 65 and those who are disabled, at a time when interest in these plans is growing in part because the baby boomers are aging.

The deal underscores the major changes taking place in the health care industry as a result of the landmark overhaul. It marks the second time since the Supreme Court upheld the law in June that a big insurer has snapped up a smaller company focused on government coverage. Last month, WellPoint Inc., which offers Blue Cross-Blue Shield plans in 14 states, announced a $4.46 billion deal to buy Amerigroup Corp., and more acquisitions are likely.

Aetna is the nation's third-largest health insurer based on enrollment, trailing only UnitedHealth Group Inc. and WellPoint. Coventry, a smaller insurer, is one of the leading providers of both Medicaid and Medicare-based coverage.

States hire insurers like Coventry to offer Medicaid coverage to their residents. Coventry said last month that its Medicaid enrollment had doubled to about 932,000 people. It also provides Medicare prescription drug coverage to about 1.5 million people.

Aetna officials said Monday the acquisition of Coventry will help it grab new business in a number of ways after the overhaul's coverage expansions start in 2014, about six months after the deal is expected to close.

That's the year when more people will become eligible for Medicaid and the government also will start providing income-based subsidies to help people buy private insurance. Customers will be able to buy private coverage or sign up for Medicaid by visiting online marketplaces that act like souped-up versions of travel websites for booking vacations.

"You need to be in all of those businesses with the ability to track your members through their life stages so that you can keep them in an Aetna product," Aetna Chief Financial Officer Joe Zubretsky said. "We don't think the market fully appreciates that, but we're very focused on that."

Aside from the overhaul expansion, insurers also see growth opportunities in Medicaid due to patients who are eligible for both that program and Medicare. States are starting to move these so-called "dual eligible" residents, who generally have expensive medical conditions, into managed care programs that coordinate care and cut wasteful spending.

The deal also ramps up Aetna Inc.'s Medicare Advantage and Medicare prescription drug businesses. Medicare Advantage plans are privately run, subsidized versions of Medicare that frequently offer extras such as dental or vision coverage. OK?

These plans are expected to grow because more baby boomers are aging and become eligible for the Medicare. Medicaid and Medicare Advantage currently represent small slices of Aetna's enrollment. But the company expects the deal to raise the revenue it draws from government business to 30 percent, from 23 percent.

Zubretsky said the broad portfolio of businesses Aetna will acquire from Coventry makes the acquisition a "fabulous deal" regardless of how November's presidential elections turn out and whether the overhaul survives political opposition into 2014.

"We believe this acquisition positions us very well for all possible scenarios," he said.

Aetna will pay $42.08 for each share of Coventry stock. That includes $27.30 in cash and a portion of its stock. The price represents a 20 percent premium on Coventry's Friday closing price of $34.94.

Fitch Ratings also said the deal will benefit Aetna, but the ratings service placed the insurer's debt on a negative ratings watch. Fitch noted in a statement that the acquisition is bigger and more complex than other deals the insurer has done, and it will be financed mostly by debt.

Aetna expects its latest deal with Coventry to modestly help earnings next year, not counting transaction costs. Aetna forecasts a gain of about 45 cents per share to its annual earnings in 2014 and 90 cents per share in 2015 from the deal.

Why sales doesn't have its rightful place at the boardroom table?

August 8, 2012 was a milestone for professional salespeople around Australia. Until that day there had been no officially recognised benchmark for professional selling at tertiary level.

Finance, marketing, production, engineering, IT, business administration, research and design, human resources, logistics, procurement and even entrepreneurship ? it's a long list ? all have recognised tertiary qualifications. Professional business selling is the last role in the value chain to be officially recognised in this space.

So here we are. It has taken over 100 years for sales and selling to make it on the Australian tertiary curriculum.

Here is a summary of the speech that Peter Finkelstein, head of sales strategy at Barrett Consulting Group, gave at the Barrett-Swinburne University partnership launch to provide Australia's first VET accredited, university endorsed sales training and development program, providing both a Diploma in Business and Certificate 4 in Business Sales:

"Throughout my global travels I've noticed a universal truth ? no one aspires to becoming a salesperson. When I asked 142 boys and girls in Year 12 what their career choice was for when they left school answers included doctors, pilots, architects and marketing but not sales.

So we come to the question: Why does sales enjoy so little respect in the business mix that even children fail to regard it as a career choice? Everyone knows that without an effective sales function companies will not generate the revenue needed to sustain their business. Why then, is sales so disrespected by management, academics and management scientists and even by young adults on the verge of going into business?

In my experience there are four reasons that stand out.

Firstly, it was the history of selling that started the rot. Then, in the 1960s, sales was hijacked by marketing. Then there's the general lack of understanding of the salesperson's role by management and, lastly, the state of denial that many salespeople live with.

The history of selling started it. We've all heard tales of the "snake oil salesmen" ? salesmen who travelled from town to town selling off the back of a wagon with empty promises of salvation and remedies that would solve every ailment. The buyer's impression of salespeople at that time: "Don't trust them. They tell lies to get you to buy."

As the market matured and customers built resistance, salespeople developed different hard sell techniques. Snake oil selling was replaced with Mood then Barrier and finally Formula Selling. All three techniques designed to trap and manipulate customers into buying.

In the 1960s, when the concept of formula selling failed to deliver the expected results, management turned to marketing for advice. After all, marketing professionals were educated, had some form of university degree and were thus better qualified to answer sales problems than sales managers who only had a lot of experience on their side.

Given the confidence (misplaced as it may have been) that management has in marketing, it is not surprising that marketing hijacked sales. Suddenly, the "experts" on the subject of all things related to sales and selling were marketing professionals.

They developed sales campaigns, took over the interface with management and became the custodians of customer knowledge and experts on customer profiles, behaviour, habits and needs.

The reality is that marketing did such a great public relations job, management saw them as squirrels ? cute, cuddly and non-threatening ? as opposed to sales, who are viewed as rats ? hard, threatening and pushy. Management seems to have forgotten that both squirrels and rats are rodents. Sales and marketing are two sides of the same coin ? equal partners who need one another.

Few senior executives come up through the ranks of sales. Most are accountants, engineers, MBAs, etc. Perhaps it's because management have been to university, whereas salespeople have generally not, to be top earning professionals, that this skewed view has evolved. Most boardrooms see expert opinions sought from finance, HR and marketing, but when the challenge is a sales problem everyone has an expert opinion for the sales manager (who is seldom invited to the board meeting).

Perhaps it's the behaviour of salespeople and their managers ? after all, most salespeople are extrovert, apparently insensitive to the feelings of others, always out of the office enjoying the great weather, having long lunches and early evening drinks. If they get all the perks the least they can do is be humble and deliver the high volumes of sales the company demands.

Lastly, too many salespeople live in a state of denial. Many salespeople today neglect to place the word "sales" on their business cards. They have little respect for themselves or their profession, preferring titles such as account manager, pre-sales support executive and consultant.

The fact is salespeople are trained in what they do. They learn about their products and services; about their competitors and their products and services, about their market, customers and their business, about marketing and about relationship building; about production, distribution and financial issues. They learn to understand costs and margins ? if not the use of models, then certainly the practical application of them. And in the process they learn some selling skills. If they don't do that their chances of making it are almost nil.

That's right. Professional salespeople spend a lot more than five years studying. The nature of the craft is one that demands practical implementation, so they learn and study on the job. Like tradesmen, they serve an apprenticeship that takes them through the stages of development until they can stand alone, unsupervised.

So, yes, they may not have university degrees and may not have studied for three years on a trot, but they are well trained and just as competent as other executives. And now, if they and their companies invest in these same salespeople getting a Diploma in Business they can reduce the learning curve, shorten the sales development cycle and fast-track their return on investment."

Remember, everybody lives by selling something.

Debra Lattanzi Shutika - Beyond the Borderlands: Migration and Belonging in the United States and Mexico
Published: 2011-07-08 | ISBN: 0520269594, 0520269586 | PDF | 312 pages | 3 MB

Over the last three decades, migration from Mexico to the United States has moved beyond the borderlands to diverse communities across the country, with the most striking transformations in American suburbs and small towns. This study explores the challenges encountered by Mexican families as they endeavor to find their place in the U.S. by focusing on Kennett Square, a small farming village in Pennsylvania known as the "Mushroom Capital of the World." In a highly readable account based on extensive fieldwork among Mexican migrants and their American neighbors, Debra Lattanzi Shutika explores the issues of belonging and displacement that are central concerns for residents in communities that have become new destinations for Mexican settlement. Beyond the Borderlands also completes the circle of migration by following migrant families as they return to their hometown in Mexico, providing an illuminating perspective of the tenuous lives of Mexicans residing in, but not fully part of, two worlds.

    Correction: Security Guard Shooting story

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In a story Aug. 16 about a shooting at the Family Research Council, The Associated Press, relying on information from George Mason University, reported erroneously that suspect Floyd L. Corkins II received a master's degree in 2006 from George Mason's College of Education and Human Development in Fairfax. His father, who is also named Floyd Corkins, earned that degree. The younger Corkins attended George Mason between 2005 and 2007 as part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences but did not graduate.

A corrected version of the story is below:

Conservative, gay rights groups spar over shooting

Conservative, gay rights groups spar after shooting at Family Research Council headquarters

By ERIC TUCKER and BEN NUCKOLS

    Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) ? As authorities revealed details about the Family Research Council shooting, the head of the influential conservative organization blamed the attack on "reckless rhetoric," but then delivered his own politically-charged remark, saying critics gave the accused gunman "a license to shoot an unarmed man."

Tony Perkins' comments Thursday fanned already-inflamed statements from both sides, tapped into deep divisions over abortion and gay marriage, and drew more finger-pointing.

Meanwhile, the accused shooter, Floyd Lee Corkins II, was ordered held without bond on accusations he opened fire a day earlier inside the lobby of the council's headquarters. Corkins, whose parents said he strongly supported gay rights, had a backpack full of Chick-fil-A sandwiches and a box of ammunition when he said words to the effect of "I don't like your politics" and shot a security guard, authorities said.

The guard was shot in the left arm but nonetheless managed to help take down the gunman, preventing what the police said could have been a deadly attack.

It wasn't immediately clear why Corkins, 28, had the chicken sandwiches.

The Family Research Council has steadfastly supported the president of Chick-Fil-A and his staunch opposition to same-sex marriage, a stance that has placed the fast-food chain at the center of a hot-button national cultural debate.

The organization strongly opposes gay marriage and abortion and says it advocates "faith, family and freedom in public policy and public opinion." The conservative group maintains a powerful lobbying presence, testifying before Congress and reviewing legislation.

While blaming Corkins for the shooting, Perkins also faulted the Southern Poverty Law Center, an Alabama-based civil rights organization that tracks and litigates against hate groups. The law center labeled the council a hate group in 2010 for what it called the organization's anti-gay stance.

"Corkins was given a license to shoot an unarmed man by organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center that have been reckless in labeling organization hate groups because they disagree with them on public policy," Perkins said.

Mark Potok, a senior fellow at the SPLC, called Perkins' accusation "outrageous." He said the council earned the designation for spreading false propaganda about the gay community, not for its opposition to same-sex marriage.

"The FRC routinely pushes out demonizing claims that gay people are child molesters and worse ? claims that are provably false," he said in a statement. "It should stop the demonization and affirm the dignity of all people."

Corkins had recently been volunteering at a D.C. community center for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. He lived with his parents in Herndon, Va., and appearing in court Thursday with what looked to be a black or swollen eye, told a federal magistrate that he had only $300.

Prosecutors requested a mental health evaluation, and Corkins' public defender did not address the allegations in court.

Corkins faces charges of assault with intent to kill and bringing firearms across state. The judge ordered him held pending a hearing next week. Corkins was otherwise silent during the hearing and stared ahead impassively.

His parents have also not commented, but they told FBI agents that their son "has strong opinions with respect to those he believes do not treat homosexuals in a fair manner."

The assault charge carries up to 30 years in prison and the weapons charge has a 10-year maximum sentence.

Corkins attended George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., between 2005 and 2007 as part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences but did not graduate. He earlier attended Grace Brethren Christian School near Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington.

The shooting was condemned by President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, as well as gay and lesbian advocacy groups and conservative organizations.

But there was no swift sign of reconciliation across the ideological spectrum.

"Perkins cannot be allowed to exploit the sympathy rightfully generated by this inexcusable crime to whitewash his group's ongoing anti-gay activities. If the FRC wants to stop being labeled a hate group, it must stop doing and saying hateful things," Wayne Besen, the founding executive director of Truth Wins Out, a non-profit group that fights anti-gay sentiment, said in a statement.

Authorities believe Corkins parked his car at a northern Virginia Metro station and used public transportation to get downtown. An open black box resembling a gun box was found on the car's passenger seat, an affidavit said. Corkins used a Sig Sauer 9mm pistol that was legally bought and owned, said Richard Marianos, special agent in charge of the ATF's Washington field office.

The guard, Leonardo "Leo" Johnson, 46, was resting comfortably at a hospital Thursday morning. He told WJLA-TV that Corkins claimed he had come to the council's office to interview for an internship.

Johnson's mother, Virginia Johnson, said she had not been to visit him but had spoken to him by phone.

"He said he feels very well," she said in a brief interview. "I am proud of him, very proud of him."
