Report: Apple exec refused to apologize for Maps

(AP) ? The head of Apple's iPhone software development was asked to resign after he refused to sign a letter apologizing for the flaws of Apple's mapping application, according to a published report.

The Wall Street Journal says Scott Forstall's refusal was the latest clash between him and other executives, and led to the company's announcement Monday that he is stepping down and leaving the company next year.

Forstall's unit was responsible for the Maps application, which was unfavorably compared to the Google Maps app it replaced.

Apple also announced the immediate departure of John Browett, a British retail executive who took over Apple's stores in April.

Bananas could be future staple

Climate change could lead to crops from the banana family becoming a critical food source for millions of people, a new report says.

Researchers from the CGIAR agricultural partnership say the fruit might replace potatoes in some developing countries.

Cassava and the little-known cowpea plant could be much more important food crops as temperatures rise.

People will have to adapt to new and varied menus as traditional crops struggle, say the authors.

When the farmers see the problems they are having with production, they really are willing to shift?

End Quote Bruce Campbell CCAFS

Responding to a request from the United Nations' committee on world food security, a group of experts in the field looked at the projected effects of climate change on 22 of the world's most important agricultural commodities.

Blooming bananas

They predict that the world's three biggest crops in terms of calories provided - maize, rice and wheat - will decrease in many developing countries.

They suggest that the potato, which grows best in cooler climates, could also suffer as temperatures increase and weather becomes more volatile.

The authors argue that these changes "could provide an opening for cultivating certain varieties of bananas" at higher altitudes, even in those places that currently grow potatoes.

Dr Philip Thornton is one of those behind the report. He told BBC News that while bananas and plantains also have limiting factors, they may be a good substitute for potatoes in certain locations.

"It's not necessarily a silver bullet, but there may be places where as temperatures increase, bananas might be one option that small-holders could start to look at."

The report describes wheat as the world's most important plant-derived protein and calorie source.

But according to this research, wheat will face a difficult future in the developing world, where higher prices for cotton, maize and soybeans have pushed wheat to marginal land, making it more vulnerable to stresses induced by climate change.

One substitute, especially in South Asia, could be cassava - which is known to be tolerant to a range of climate stresses.

But how easy will it be to get people to adjust to new crops and new diets?

Bruce Campbell is programme director of the Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security research group (CCAFS) which co-ordinates work among leading institutions around the world. He told BBC News that the types of changes that will happen in the future have already happened in the past.

Protein under pressure

"Two decades ago there was almost no rice consumption in certain areas of Africa, now there is. People have changed because of the pricing: it's easier to get, it's easier to cook. I think those sort of shifts do occur and I think they will in future."

About bananas

  • There are hundreds of types of banana plants but not all actually produce fruit
  • They grow on plants that are giant herbs and are part of the Musaceae family
  • Plantains are starchy like a potato, not sweet like a regular banana
  • Organised banana plantations have been traced back to China in 200 AD
  • Alexander the Great brought them back from India after his conquest in 327 BC
  • Over the centuries they have been called banna, ghana and funana

One of the big concerns among researchers is how to tackle the need for protein in the diet. Soybeans are one of the most common sources but are very susceptible to temperature changes.

The scientists say that the cowpea, which is known in sub-Saharan Africa as the "poor man's meat" is drought-tolerant and prefers warmer weather and could be a reasonable alternative to soya. The vines of the cowpea can also be used as a feed for livestock.

In some countries, including Nigeria and Niger, farmers have already moved away from cotton production to growing cowpeas.

There are also likely to be developments in animal protein sources says the report, including a shift to smaller livestock.

"This is an example of something that's happening already," said Dr Campbell. "There's been quite a shift from cattle keeping to goat keeping in southern Africa in face of droughts - when the farmers see the problems they are having with production, they really are willing to shift.

"Change is really possible. It's not just a crazy notion."

Travelers, cargo stranded as airports, rails assess damage

(Reuters) - As rail, transit, airline and port workers dug through debris, dealt with power outages and assessed damage on Tuesday, one thing became increasingly clear:

Restoring full transportation could take some time.

Hurricane Sandy's assault on the eastern United States so brutally flooded tracks and roads, felled trees and downed power lines, it could be days or weeks before travelers and cargo are moving around normally again, officials said.

The three major New York area airports, which serve the nation's busiest airspace, remained closed on Tuesday, and officials said they had no estimate for when the airports would fully reopen.

Late Tuesday, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said it was possible that there would be limited service on Wednesday at John F. Kennedy International Airport. There was no indication that LaGuardia and Newark Liberty would offer service on Wednesday. The three airports handle 300,000 passengers a day.

Nearly 16,000 flights have been canceled since Sunday as a result of the storm, including 7,791 canceled on Monday, 6,047 on Tuesday and 635 so far for Wednesday, according to flight tracking service FlightAware.com.

Airlines said they planned to restart service Tuesday at some East Coast airports, including Boston and Philadelphia. Both Dulles and Reagan National in Washington, D.C., were open during the storm and airlines are starting to bring personnel and planes back; limited operations were expected to begin Tuesday afternoon, said Kimberly Gibbs, a spokeswoman with Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.

"New York airports are still a question," JetBlue spokeswoman Allison Steinberg said on Tuesday. "We are waiting for condition reports from the Port Authority, but we are ready to deploy our plan to resume operations to JFK, LaGuardia and Newark tomorrow afternoon."

And even if the airports reopen, travelers' itineraries are likely to be tangled throughout the week as airlines sort out getting their people, planes and passengers into position.

"If flights (in the New York area) started to resume as early as tomorrow, it could be four to five days before we start to see schedules get back to normal," said Jeanenne Tornatore, a senior editor with online travel agency Orbitz Worldwide. "I think it will be into the late weekend."

Most Amtrak service along the busy Northeast corridor remained suspended for a second day Tuesday, but officials were working to reopen some service Wednesday.

"We have crews out there right now assessing and making necessary repairs," said Christina Leeds, an Amtrak spokeswoman.

United Parcel Service, the world's largest package delivery company, said it had resumed deliveries to hospitals and clinics in Manhattan and New Jersey where roads are safe.

But delivery remained halted in Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia. UPS is "respecting areas where government officials only want emergency responders out in Delaware, New Jersey, Philly and parts of Maryland and Virginia," spokeswoman Susan Rosenberg said.

FedEx Corp said it was working to resume service on Wednesday in affected areas, but that hub airport closures and storm debris would affect service. "If you're at a house blockaded by fallen trees, we won't be able to get to it," said Scott Fiedler, a spokesman.

In New York, workers from the Port Authority and the Federal Aviation Administration are assessing damage at major airports, including power issues, possible damage to structures and other safety checks, the FAA and the Port Authority said.

Airlines needed to bring back planes, which were flown out to avoid the storm, to resume service.

"We are focused on reopening as quickly as possible. But we will not compromise safety," said Pasquale DiFulco, a spokesman for the Port Authority. "We need to walk the runways and make sure there's no debris."

He declined to estimate when they would reopen. "Certainly we would like to within the next few days seek to resume normal operations," he said. "But a lot of things are outside our control."

The reopening of New York's transit system will play a large role in reopening the airports, because many of the workers at security checkpoints, customs and concessions, and baggage handlers and flight crews, rely on public transportation to get to work. "That's going to be a key part of the equation," DiFulco said.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said it could take four or five days to restore service on the city transit system, the nation's largest.

"The availability of public transportation will also play into the New York plan, too - so it remains very, very fluid," said JetBlue spokeswoman Steinberg.

About 220 travelers remain stranded at the airports - 100 at John F. Kennedy and 60 each at Newark Liberty and LaGuardia, DiFulco said. They were provided with cots and at least one food vendor was required to stay open 24 hours at each terminal.

"We hate to see anybody stranded," DiFulco said. "We're providing cots and water and working on food vouchers. We're doing everything we can to keep people comfortable."

Meanwhile, flights resumed Tuesday at Stewart International Airport, about 60 miles north of Manhattan, near Newburgh, New York. The first commercial flight since the storm was expected to arrive around noon Tuesday, DiFulco said.

Railway freight companies also were working to restore service. CSX Corp, the nation's second-largest publicly traded railway company, said its network remains closed from Richmond, Virginia, to Albany, New York, and that it had halted traffic originating on other lines traveling to most points between Boston and Philadelphia.

CSX said it still had a lot of its track to inspect, and that it had found flooding, downed trees and power outages along the route.

"Our engineering teams are out removing trees, making sure generators are up against power outages, and reinstalling crossing gates."

Norfolk Southern Corp said it was waiting for floodwater to subside, was clearing snow in western Virginia and West Virginia, and had a power line across tracks in Cleveland.

Airlines could lose $175 million in revenue from flights canceled because of the storm, said Michael Boyd, an aviation consultant with Boyd Group International in Evergreen, Colorado.

"None of it is life-threatening corporately, but it is significant," he said.

Boyd said Delta Air Lines, JetBlue and United would be among the carriers taking the hardest financial hit. He added that AMR Corp's American Airlines operates 25 percent of the flights at JFK.

"From the airline perspective, closing your major hubs for several days is worth of a lot of revenue," said Carter Leake, an analyst at BB&T Capital Markets in Richmond, Virginia.

Airlines have high fixed costs and the loss of revenue would likely lower profits, he added.

Philadelphia's airport did not close but Monday flights were canceled. "We had no damage to the facility, we had no flooding so we were very fortunate," airport spokeswoman Victoria Lupica said on Tuesday.

Germany's Lufthansa has an inbound and outbound flight, and cargo carriers have resumed some operations, she said.

Delta Air Lines said it resumed flights to Philadelphia on Tuesday afternoon.

Atlantic City's airport was closed except for military flights, but Spirit Airlines, the main commercial carrier there, may resume some service later on Tuesday, said Kevin Rehmann, a spokesman for the South Jersey Transportation Authority.

The area was hard hit as the hurricane came ashore Monday night. "The water is receding but it left behind lots of debris and mud and dirt," he said.

Precious Metals Analyst Launches New Website

With the release of the new SunshineProfits.com website, gold and silver investors gained numerous tools that can greatly improve their rates of return.

(PRWEB) October 24, 2012

Unique investment tools, proprietary indicators, and interactive software are only some of the features of the newly launched Sunshine Profits' gold and silver investment website (http://www.SunshineProfits.com). Sunshine Profits is a comprehensive, analytic resource for investors in the precious metals markets. The price of gold has gone up over 400 per cent in the past 10 years, but it has been a bumpy ride with some painful corrections. Proprietary indicators available at Sunshine Profits help investors spot market turning points ahead of time, key to success in this secular gold bull market. Access to these tools enables individual investors to manage risk, fine-tune position size, and make intelligent investment decisions. Rankings of gold and silver stocks are constantly updated and tailored for each investor.

The investment service was launched in 2008 by Przemyslaw Radomski, a Charted Financial Analyst (CFA). Radomski, who designs financial software, began investing in the precious metals markets as a teenager.

?I began investing for my own portfolio when I was still a teenager. My mother, a single parent, passed away when I was 17. She had left me a small inheritance. I was on my own, so to speak, so I had to make decisions about where to invest this money. It was then that I decided to study finance professionally - that was the beginning of my education in the markets and finance. I was drawn into the precious metals market when I saw gold's rally before the war in Iraq and I've been studying it ever since.?

?Even though we operate this website, we don't own it,? says Radomski. ?In fact, our subscribers own it. This website is all about the individual investor. It is his portfolio growth on which we focus our efforts.?

The subscription base has been expanding dramatically with the growth of interest in commodities investing. Sunshine Profits provides its subscribers with timely ?Market Alerts? in addition to its weekly in-depth analysis of the investment markets. The investment analysis software, which is user interactive, is updated daily and available to subscribers 24/7.

10 reasons why they shouldn't make a Mass Effect movie | Video ...

I can?t go a day without hearing some kind news about a video game franchise I?ve enjoy getting turned into a movie. A few years ago, Halo was all anyone was talking about, with Peter Jackson at the helm no less. Then rumours about a Bioshock movie were buzzing around my feet, until they realised how expensive filming underwater was going to be. More recently I?m hearing rumours about an Assassin?s Creed movie and Mass Effect being sized up for the silver screen

The latest stories have been chatting of who is going to have the unenviable job of writing the script. Not too long ago Mark Protosevich, know for working on Thor and I am Legend was apparently writing it, however, the latest rumours are buzzing around the head of relative unknown Morgan Davis Foehl. The most notable films attached to his name are Click and I Now Pronounce you Chuck and Larry. Working on Adam Sandler movies doesn?t really bring thoughts of a nuanced plot development with deep and layered characters.

Before I jump the gun though, he doesn?t have any writing credits on either of those films, so his chops in the pen and paper department are yet to be proven. I?ve also read that he?s a ?fan? of series, I?m not going to judge a script I know nothing about though, so let?s leave that for now. The thing is though, as good or as bad a writer they get for the script is irrelevant, in this day and age I think cinema and video games should remain very separate entities.

Mass Effect is a prime example of a game that really shouldn?t be made into a movie, and I?m going to give my 10 reasons I think they shouldn?t make a Mass Effect movie:

?10. Games are already cinematic enough

It?s no question that the majority of video game movies are bad, sure one or two of them might be entertaining romps, but I can?t think of one that I would classify as an outstanding piece of cinema. The problem is that as video games have evolved as a medium, they?ve taken so many pointers from cinema and television in the development of their stories that often making a movie version of a game will be nothing but a neutered version of what we?ve already seen within the game, chopped down to last around two hours.

Years back, there was a lot that could be interpreted from popular video games. They were so simplistic that writers could take a basic idea and just roll with that, making up everything else as they went along, the Super Mario Bros. movie would be the classic example. Super Mario Bros. was a premise, not a full narrative, unless of course, you make a movie about a guy running to the right and jumping on a few turtles for 90 minutes.

Around the era of the Playstation 1 though, storytelling in games became more dynamic and started to take on traits of movies in their cut scenes and plot development. Metal Gear Solid being the most iconic game of that era that really had the cinematic style and things has only become more cinematic from there.

?9. It will be indecisive about it?s target audience

This is something of problem that all video game movie share, they?re caught in a perpetual limbo between being something that is trying to be faithful to its source material, and something that is going to appeal to the masses that don?t know what Silent Hill or Prince of Persia is.

In the end, the backers are more interested in exploiting an established fan base for a quick pay day, and couldn?t give two craps whether the thing is faithful or not, which sadly is a very common problem amongst these types of films. While I?m sure screen writers do some very thorough research when writing scripts based on video games, chances are, they?ve never played the games themselves nor have the same feelings about it as the fans. Although, I could be wrong.

And even if they did get a writer in who knows the lore like the back of their hand, executives and censors will want the film to have mass appeal. With the movie based on a game, that would mean it?s for kids right? So any mature or violent themes that come from these adult themed games will be cut, giving us a neutered final product.

Seriously, there have been so many movies that could have been great in the past year, but have been ruined so that they can get a PG-13 rating. This is something that really gets on my nerves and leads to my next point.

?8. Hollywood has a lack of respect for video game movies

Despite the ridiculous amounts of money the video games industry makes, coupled with the fact that the most successful entertainment releases of the past few years have been Call of duty games, games with a Mature rating, video games are still seen as a kid?s pastime by a lot of the western media, including Hollywood.

In spite of the money it makes and the average gamers? age being in their 30s, I see talk shows featuring middle aged hosts attacking video games and the industry in a witch hunt like fashion. They make ill informed and ludicrous claims towards an industry they have no intention of trying to understand. ?Video games are for children, and no adult themes or situations should ever take place within them?, which is silly considering some of the best games to come out in the past few years have had 15 and 18 age labels on them here in the U.K.

The point I?m trying to make is that if they were to make a Mass Effect film, in all likelihood the movie would have a pg-13 on it. Any real drama, emotion or harsh realities displayed in the games will be omitted in favour of a family friendly sci-fi action film.

7. Inevitable changes to established characters

Returning to the prospect of the film itself, if there was one thing I could pick out from the Mass Effect series to try and define it, it would be its cast of characters and their development as the series went. Joker, Garrus, Liara, Tali, Kaiden and Ashley: They all go through a lot of character defining moments throughout the series, and the player is there for every moment of that.

Hence, these characters have become incredibly recognisable to the gaming and internet community at large. Many would (and have) argued that if Seth Green wasn?t cast as Jeff ?Joker? Moreau, then they?d refuse to see the movie at all. With so many memorable voices and faces ingrained in our minds after three games of constant interaction, to see any difference attached to these characters would be jarring.

Don?t get me wrong, I?m not expecting the cast of the movie to be the exact same cast of the game, that would be unreasonable, but seeing anyone but Martin Sheen sitting in that chair, staring at that sun while taking a drag of that cigarette just wouldn?t sit right with me. It would just take me out of the movie and I would always be comparing different versions of the characters, be it on a conscious level or not.

6. Whose stories do you tell?

This is something of continuation of the previous point. With so many characters in the series, all with their own complex back stories and character arcs; it?s easy to see how people spend hour upon hour on a single play through. Part of the enjoyment I got from playing these games was from interacting with these characters and finding out what made them tick. I can guarantee you, there will be nowhere near this level of development in a movie.

Even if they do decide to try and focus on one or two of the characters, it would either slow the movie to a snail?s pace. This won?t be a movie where characters fight inner demons, any character development will probably be rushed and heavy handed.

On top of that, not everyone will get to see their favourite characters in action, I?d almost put money on characters like Tali being relegated to the background of the movie despite her enthusiastic fan base.

A Mass Effect movie wouldn?t be an in depth character study, of course not, it would be a brainless action movie. In a movie based around the events of the first game, the three human crew members would most defiantly be the stars while all our favourite aliens would be relegated to cameo duty.

5. Male Shep or Fem Shep?

This might seem like an odd one, but it really is a genuine issue that some people will have with the film. Obviously, if this gets made Shepard will be a man, there is no question there, but for some of us, Commander Shepard is and always has been a woman.

Personally, I much prefer playing the female Shepard, I think Jennifer Hale?s voice acting is a notch above her male equivalent and her interactions with the other characters are just generally more entertaining.

The movie having a male Sheppard isn?t something I would hold against it in earnest, but the fact that a great number of people do play as femshep, coupled with the fact that it is a definable choice in the game is something that the movie just won?t be able to do anything to make up for.

4. It will define a universe not everyone agrees with

Again, this is a continuation of the previous point. Like picking Commander Shepard?s gender, the Mass Effect series is about defining your own galaxy and making your own choices as to the fate of everyone in the galaxy. Every person has a slightly different version of the Mass Effect universe as they play, whether they allow the Rachni queen to survive on Noveria, to if they decided to punch out Khalisah al-Jilani. Even the ending isn?t set in stone with four different endings, each of which has a few variables within that.

There is no defined course of events in the Mass Effect universe and the entire story is open to the player?s interpretation. The Galaxy and end up any number of very different places after the events of the game depending on what the player does.

If the movie is made, it will likely star a male Shepard, he?ll likely be of the solider class, he?ll most likely choose all of the paragon actions, he?ll be romantically involved with Ash and will most likely leave Kaiden to die on Virmire.

In a game with this many branches, any choice the movie makes will alienate an audience member that really wanted to see events turn out a certain way. It will take the fans out of the movie when they so badly wanted a renegade Shepard biotic charge some geth into oblivion. Bottom line is, you can?t please everyone, and with so many divergent possibilities, you?re guaranteed to disappoint everyone at least once.

3. It will be nit picked to death

Like any series with a rabid fan base, chances are the writers or the actors or the set designers are going to get some little detail wrong at some point. And when they do, you can bet that their names will be cursed to the sky by those amongst us that have played through the series till our fingers bled.

Not that it will ruin the movie itself, but with the internet becoming so jaded and rage filled, people are going to hate on it, and continue hating on it given any opportunity. Even the biggest and most anticipated films have the trolls and the complainers trying to kill the joy everyone else want to experience. Mass Effect, being a series with a massive fan base and pretty extensively established lore on top of the three games; it won?t be a stranger to these problems.

2. It will likely be a cartoon

This is a personal grievance above anything else. Films are becoming too reliant on CGI and post effects as they develop and get ever cheaper to produce, I can easily see a Mass Effect movie suffering the same fate. If conventions have taught me anything, it?s that it is perfectly possible for a fan make a real life Turian or Krogan costume that looks pretty damn good. Taking this into consideration, imagine what highly paid professionals could do.

An animatronic Wrex head would be a thing of real beauty, but the cost in realising it will make it extremely unlikely. While I can see the Asari and Quarians getting away with being real actors in costume and make up, the Turians, Krogan and Salarians will almost defiantly be computer generated, and at that point, I end up thinking I might as well just go play the game.

All I can think of when it comes to the visuals of a potential Mass Effect movie is a behind the scenes clip during the making of Revenge of the Sith. I distinctly remember seeing a scene shot on a huge green screen stage where the only real thing on there was a single actor and the vast majority of the rest was CG. I can only hope the film turns out more Galactica than Star Wars prequels.

1. They might make more?

So let?s assume they do make the Mass Effect movie, and let?s also assume that all my complains made in this list amount to nothing and the movie turns out to be absolutely god damn fantastic. Where do we go from there? Well the obvious thought in many people?s heads would be ?Holy crap, a good video game movie. Maybe they?ll make some more like this?.

And thus the flood gates open. With a proven VG movie released and sold, many, many more game movies will get the green light and be fast tracked into production, and you never know, there might be quite a few gems in there that made the whole thing worthwhile.

But, as well as these gems, there will be a lot of films rushed out that will turn out to be utter crap. The thing that pains me about this prospect is that these rushed and crappy films they could make might be the series that have had a lot of potential. They could then find themselves black listed for the foreseeable future. It happened with the Fantastic Four and Daredevil, I?d hate to see it happen with Bioshock or Metal Gear.

?

And those are ten reasons I don?t want there to be a Mass Effect movie. In spite of my moaning though, I?m not entirely a miserable old fart, there would be some up sides to this movie coming out, good or bad. And just to try and go out on a high, I?ll give you my top three best things to come out of a potential Mass Effect movie:

?

3. Some great props and costumes

I have seen some great props and costumes made around weapons and characters based on the series. Prop builders and cosplayers really have shown their passion for the series my making some amazing replicas of things from the games.

Getting to see some expertly made firearms and armours from the games realised in real life and being used on the big screen will be very nice to see.

2. The terror of the Reapers

The thing that made the Reapers such effective villains was the inevitability of them. They were so big and so numerous that when they eventually land in Mass Effect 3, I wondered how the hell Shepard was supposed to beat an enemy that just seemed like a force of nature more than anything else.

And that?s how they are portrayed throughout the entire series, as an irresistible force that you can?t fight no matter what. I remember the feeling of dread upon seeing them at the very end of Mass Effect 2 and the effect they had on me as I connected to the universe the games created for me.

Seeing the Reapers in any shape or form on the big screen will be a treat and if the writer who eventually does finish a script knows anything about the games, he?ll make them the defining moment of the whole thing.

1. It gives makes video game movies a more genuine prospect

This is basically me contradicting my final point in my other list, but if a Mass Effect movie were to come out and be anything above Dragonball levels of awful, then it would start to pave the way for video game movies with some genuine passion behind them, rather than being a product of the money making machine.

I suppose my closing thoughts on the matter would be how you want to look at it, and whether you?re an optimist or a pessimist. If you think a few bad movies being made is worth a few gems and the eventual embrace of the two entertainment mediums, then more power to you. But personally, I would seat video games and movies at opposite ends of the classroom and make special effort that they grow up without ever so much as a brush of elbows until one eventually keels over and dies.

Romney shows softer side; Obama raising more cash

Today, the foothills of the Tehachapi mountains continue to house the United Farm Workers of America headquarters and memorials to Chavez, though farmworkers no longer live there. (AP) ? Mitt Romney is showing his softer side, while President Barack Obama works to extend his cash advantage as both men begin the final-month sprint to Election Day.

The Republican presidential nominee was spending a second consecutive day campaigning in Florida on Sunday, where he is drawing on the success of his recent debate performance and pressing a populist message.

"These are tough years for the middle class and the poor in America," he told more than 6,000 supporters Saturday night at an amphitheater in Apopka, Fla., near Orlando.

He later shared his personal connection to three people who have died, including a former classmate who attended one of his rallies despite being wheelchair-bound.

Romney said he whispered in his friend's ear, "I love ya and God bless ya."

"He died the next day," he continued. "It's rare that you get a chance to tell someone how much you love him while you still can."

The message is part of a larger strategy to emphasize Romney's compassionate side and centrist political positions as he courts the slice of voters yet to settle on a candidate.

Obama, meanwhile, is trying to recover from a lackluster debate last week that gave his Republican rival some badly needed momentum. The president got some good news of his own when Friday's jobs report put the nation's unemployment rate at the lowest level of his presidency.

Obama's campaign is well-positioned to press his message that the nation's economy is moving in the right direction over the contest's final month. While polls suggest the race is tightening, Obama and his party on Saturay reported raising $181 million in September. It was their best fundraising month of the campaign, but short of their record $190 million in the 2008 campaign, also in September.

Romney's campaign has not released its report for the month, and Republicans sought to downplay Obama's financial advantage. The party's national chairman, Reince Priebus, said he had been counting all along on being outraised by Obama and Democrats.

"This isn't going to come down to money. This is going to come down to heart," Priebus said on CNN's "State of the Union. "We'll beat them on the ground, and we'll have all the money we need to be competitive."

Obama was setting out Sunday to collect more campaign cash over two days in California. The state is safely in Obama's column but drawing his attention because it is rich with Democratic donors.

In what will be his final fundraising trip out West this election, Obama's celebrity friends ? from actors to singers to chefs ? will come out in force to help him get others to donate. Obama was expected to raise several million dollars.

Such a dedicated focus on fundraising this late in the campaign underscores the central role of money in swaying votes, particularly in television advertising in the eight to nine states that will decide the outcome.

On Sunday, Obama was holding two fundraisers in Los Angeles. He is also appearing at a small, elite gathering at the home of entertainment mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg, where Obama will be joined by former President Bill Clinton. His campaign calls the gathering a "thank you event" for longtime donors.

Obama's main event will be his remarks at a star-studded concert at the Nokia Theatre, marking 30 days until the election. Actor George Clooney and musical guests Stevie Wonder, Jon Bon Jovi and Katy Perry will entertain the crowd.

The president will wrap up his night at Wolfgang Puck's WP24 restaurant, high above the L.A. skyline in the Ritz-Carlton hotel. With 150 people expected at a cost of $25,000 per person, that event alone will raise $3.75 million.

Obama's trip, in total, will be three days, covering fundraisers in San Francisco and a rally in Columbus, Ohio, the state at the center of both campaign's efforts.

The only official presidential business on the trip comes Monday in Keene, Calif., where Obama will designate as a national monument the home of Latino leader Cesar Chavez, the founder of the United Farmworkers Union who died in 1993. Yet even that move has political implications. It resonates with some Hispanic voters, who supported Obama by a 2-to-1 margin in 2008 and favor him by a similar margin over Romney in this election, polling shows.

The weekend had Obama on a high, and he needed it after a lackluster midweek debate against Romney that gave fresh hope to the challenger's bid. Even Robert Gibbs, a top Obama campaign adviser, conceded that Romney had delivered "a masterful, masterful performance."

"But I don't think Gov. Romney's positions have changed, and fundamentally, I don't think the campaign has changed," Gibbs said on ABC's "This Week."

Meanwhile, Romney's campaign unveiled a new television ad claiming Obama is not telling the truth when he says Romney wants to cut $5 trillion in taxes. The campaign has not said where the ad will run.

Obama's campaign is also running a new TV ad called "Dishonest," which carries on the post-debate theme that Romney grossly misrepresented his own positions as well as Obama's on taxes. Online videos were posted by the campaign with the mantra, "Romney won't tell the truth," about Medicare, energy, taxes and more.

All the expenditures of your business should be accounted for. These expenses include car mileage, gas and internet service. You will find that many items are actually tax deductible when you own your own business. To avoid these unnecessary tax obligations, just remember to keep up with all of your business related expenses.

TIP! Don?t start a home business without having a solid understanding of everything that it?s going to take to make it successful. Consider the needs of the home business from more than one perspective.

Make sure you have a separate business account so there are records of business transactions. Make sure all orders and expenses go through this account. You can then track if your answers influenced their decision to buy your product. Keep in mind your actions, and keep doing it if it worked the first time!

Make business cards for your home business. You can usually find many good deals on business cards, and sometimes you can even get them for free. You should always include your vital contact information, like your name, the name of your business and your phone number. Don?t forget to include your website address and your email. As race stands, Obama within reach of second term

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Five weeks to Election Day, President Barack Obama is within reach of the 270 electoral votes needed to win a second term. Republican Mitt Romney's path to victory is narrowing.

To overtake Obama, Romney would need to quickly gain the upper hand in nearly all of the nine states where he and Obama are competing the hardest.

Polls show the president with a steady lead in many of them as Romney looks to shift the dynamics of the race, starting with their first debate Wednesday in Denver.

"We'd rather be us than them," says Jennifer Psaki, an Obama spokeswoman.

But Romney's political director, Rich Beeson, insists, "You still have an incumbent who's going to have a hard time getting over 50 percent in a lot of these states."

If the election were held today, an Associated Press analysis shows Obama would win at least 271 electoral votes, with likely victories in crucial Ohio and Iowa along with 19 other states and the District of Columbia. Romney would win 23 states for a total of 206.

To oust the Democratic incumbent, Romney would need to take up-for-grabs Florida, Colorado, Nevada, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Virginia, which would put him at 267 votes, and upend Obama in either Ohio or Iowa.

The AP analysis isn't meant to be predictive. Rather, it is intended to provide a snapshot of a race that until recently has been stubbornly close in the small number of the most contested states.

It is based on a review of public and private polls, television advertising and numerous interviews with campaign and party officials as well as Republican and Democratic strategists in the competitive states and in Washington.

In the final weeks before the Nov. 6 vote, Obama is enjoying a burst of momentum and has benefited from growing optimism about the economy as well as a series of Romney stumbles. Most notably, a secret video surfaced recently showing the Republican nominee telling a group of donors that 47 percent of Americans consider themselves victims dependent on the government.

To be sure, much could change in the coming weeks, which will feature three presidential and one vice presidential debate. A host of unknowns, both foreign and domestic, could rock the campaign, knocking Obama off course and giving Romney a boost in the homestretch.

Barring that, Romney's challenge is formidable.

Obama started the campaign with a slew of electoral-rich coastal states already in his win column. From the outset, Romney faced fewer paths to cobbling together the state-by-state victories needed to reach the magic number.

It's grown even narrower in recent weeks, as Romney has seen his standing slip in polls in Ohio, with 18 electoral votes, and Iowa, with six. That forced him to abandon plans to try to challenge Obama on traditionally Democratic turf so he could redouble his efforts in Ohio and Iowa, as well as Colorado, Florida, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Nevada and Virginia.

Romney is hoping that come Election Day, on-the-fence voters tip his way. But there are hurdles there, too.

Early voting is under way in dozens of states, and national and key states surveys show undecided voters feel more favorably toward Obama than Romney.

The Republican is in a tight battle with Obama in Florida, as well as Colorado, North Carolina and Nevada.

But Ohio's shifting landscape illustrates Romney's troubles over the past few weeks.

Republicans and Democrats agree that Obama's solid lead in public and private polling in the state is for real. Over the past month, the president has benefited from an improving economic situation in the state; its 7.2 percent unemployment rate is below the 8.1 percent national average. Obama's team also attributes his Ohio edge to the auto bailout and GM plant expansions in eastern Ohio.

Obama and his campaign have hammered Romney on his tax policies, arguing that the former Massachusetts governor favors the rich while the president as a defender of everyone else.

The president has seen the same good fortune in Iowa. A poll released Saturday by The Des Moines Register illustrates his advantage, showing Obama with 49 percent to 45 percent for Romney. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

"It's a direct result of the time and resources he's been forced to spend here," Iowa Republican strategist John Stineman said.

Indeed, Obama intently focused on the state ahead of an early voting period that began last week. He campaigned in Iowa aggressively this summer and dumped in a ton of TV advertising, much of it depicting Romney as wealthy and out-of-touch with working Americans.

Obama doesn't just have the wind at his back in those states.

The president also appears to be in stronger shape than Romney in Virginia, which has 13 electoral votes, and in New Hampshire, with four votes, even though Romney vacations often in the state where he has a lakeside home. Romney and GOP allies are being outspent in that state considerably, a sign of trouble for the Republican challenger.

Underscoring his challenges, Romney also has been forced to spend millions of dollars a week defending himself in North Carolina, a GOP-leaning state that's more conservative than most of the states that will decide the election.

Polls now show a competitive race there. Democrats boast of having registered 250,000 new voters in the state since April 2011. It's an eye-popping total in a state that Obama won by just 14,000 votes four years ago. A flood of new voters, presumably a chunk of them Democrats, could help keep that state within Obama's reach this year.

Also, Romney's effort to challenge Obama in Democratic-leaning Wisconsin, home state of running mate Paul Ryan, appears to have fizzled. Despite millions of dollars spent on TV in the last few weeks by both sides, polls show Obama with a clear lead in Wisconsin.

Romney's goal of forcing Obama to defend Michigan ? Romney's native state ? and Pennsylvania never materialized.

"The big strategic moment coming out of the conventions in my view was whether or not Romney and his campaign could succeed in expanding the parameters of the battleground," said Tad Devine, a top adviser to 2000 Democratic nominee Al Gore and 2004 nominee John Kerry. "They have not been able to do that."

All this has left Romney with an extraordinarily tight path and few options but to bear down in the states where he is competing aggressively. Time, though, is running out.
