Marriage reduces the risk of heart attack in both men and women and at all ages

Jan. 31, 2013 ? A large population-based study from Finland has shown that being unmarried increases the risk of fatal and non-fatal heart attack in both men and women whatever their age. Conversely, say the study investigators, especially among middle-aged couples, being married and cohabiting are associated with "considerably better prognosis of acute cardiac events both before hospitalization and after reaching the hospital alive."

The study, published today in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, was based on the FINAMI myocardial infarction register data from the years 1993 to 2002.1,2 The study included information on people over the age of 35 living in four geographical regions of Finland. All fatal and non-fatal cardiac events -- known as "acute cardiac syndromes," ACS -- were included and cross-referred to the population database. "Our aim," said the authors, "was to study the differences in the morbidity and prognosis of incident acute coronary syndromes according to socio-demographic characteristics (marital status and household size)."

The register recorded 15,330 ACS events over the study period of ten years, with just over half (7703) resulting in death within 28 days. Events occurred almost equally among men and women. However, the analysis also showed that the age-standardised incidences of these ACS events were approximately 58-66% higher among unmarried men and 60-65% higher in unmarried women, than among married men and women in all age groups.

The differences in 28-day mortality rate were even greater. These 28-day mortality rates were found to be 60-168% higher in unmarried men and 71-175% higher in unmarried women, than among married men and women.

For example, the 28-day ACS mortality rate in 65-74-year-old married men was 866 per 100,000 persons per year but 1792 per 100,000 per year in unmarried men. This rate did not differ according to previous marital status.

Similarly, mortality rates among 65-74-year old married women were 247 per 100,000 persons per year, but 493 per 100,000 when the woman was unmarried. Statistically, the figures represented a 28-day "case fatality" rate of 26% in the 35-64-year-old married men, 42% in men who had previously been married, and 51% in never-married men. Among women, the corresponding figures were 20%, 32%, and 43%.

Consistent with this finding, the case fatality rate of 35-64-year-old single men and women was higher than that of those living with one or more people.

According to the authors' background to the study, being unmarried or living alone is known to increase total and cardiovascular mortality and cardiovascular disease incidence. However, many of these previous studies have included only men in their analysis, with missing data on women and older age groups.

Why should single living or being unmarried be associated with such a greater susceptibility to coronary events, and particularly fatal events? The authors suggest several possibilities:

  • Differences in the prevalence of traditional cardiovascular risk factors. "We cannot exclude the possibility that persons with poor health status may be more prone to staying unmarried or getting divorced," the authors state.
  • Married people may be better off, have better health habits, and enjoy higher levels of social support than the unmarried, which will all promote their overall health.
  • Better prospects in the pre-hospital phase because of earlier intervention. "It may be assumed that resuscitation or calling for help was initiated faster and more often among those married or cohabiting," say the authors.
  • Better treatment once in hospital and after discharge. "We found that a larger proportion of married and cohabiting men received reperfusion therapy at acute stage which may contribute to their better survival after hospitalization. Lower adherence to secondary preventive medications (aspirin, statins, beta-blockers, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers) among the unmarried may have an adverse effect on long-term prognosis," they add.

However, lead author Dr Aino Lammintausta from Turku University Hospital in Finland also notes that these differences in prognosis cannot be fully explained by differences in treatment-seeking time or access to effective therapy. The socio-demographic differences reflected in the study's results are a "considerable population health problem," she said, which warrants further research to explain.

Toyota back on top as global auto sales champ

1 hr.

Toyota has officially reclaimed its global sales crown, the maker confirming it produced 9.75 million vehicles in 2012.

That was slightly ahead of a preliminary tally Toyota forecast as the year came to a close and locks it in first place ahead of General Motors, which sold 9.29 million vehicles.? Volkswagen, at 9.1 million, came in third for 2012.

Toyota?s sales were slightly lower than the company had projected earlier in the year, the shortfall reflecting the ongoing dispute between Japan and China over a chain of small, uninhabited islands both nations claim.?

In customary fashion, Toyota officials downplayed the sales results. ?Rather than going after numbers, we hope to make fine products, one by one, to keep out customers satisfied. The numbers are just a result of our policy. And our policy will continue unchanged,? Toyota spokeswoman Shino Yamada told the Associated Press.?

The Detroit Bureau:?US Auto Sales Surging as New Year Gets Underway

Nonetheless, it marked a significant comeback for the Japanese giant which first captured the global sales crown in 2008, displacing GM after seven decades as the sales leader. The U.S. maker plunged into bankruptcy the following year, recovering only with the assistance of a massive government loan.

With production back to normal, Toyota saw its sales in the home Japanese market surge 35% in 2012 while overseas sales jumped 23%.? Adding additional models to the ?family,? the Prius line firmed up its position as the world?s best-selling hybrid nameplate.
Toyota briefly fell to third in the global chase in 2011, the maker suffering significant production cuts in the wake of Japan?s March earthquake and tsunami. It didn?t fully restore its worldwide production network to normal operations until the end of the year.

But not everything went as well as expected ? notably in China where Toyota was just one of many Japanese businesses to suffer as the dispute over the Senkuko Islands ? which the Chinese call the Daioyu ? flared up. A Toyota dealership was torched and mobs destroyed many of the maker?s products. Sales fell by roughly half in the early weeks of the dispute though they have begun to recover more recently.?

The Detroit Bureau:?Mazda betting on alliances with Toyota, Fiat

Toyota did have some other issues, notably a surge of safety-related problems including additional recalls related to the maker?s unintended acceleration issue. In all, Toyota recalled more vehicles than any other maker in the American market in 2012, and it ended the year by agreeing to an estimated $1.2 billion settlement related to the unintended acceleration issue. Even so, most analysts say the maker?s reputation escaped with relatively little damage.

Toyota is forecasting another increase in sales for 2013, hoping to reach a record 9.91 million. That is still short of an earlier projection of at least 10 million, however.

General Motors officials have not yet set out their own forecast and that could depend on the strength of the ongoing U.S. recovery. Earlier this month, Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson said the maker expected sales in the States to reach somewhere between 15.0 million and 15.5 million for 2013.?

The Detroit Bureau:?Toyota Settles First of 100s of Wrongful Death, Injury Lawsuits

The wild card is Volkswagen, the aggressive German maker laying out plans to snatch the sales ground by the time it wraps up its current, 10-year growth plan in 2016.? The weakness of the home European market could delay that strategy, though VW hopes to offset that by stressing China, Latin America and the recovering U.S. market where it was one of the fastest-growing brands in 2012

Friar accused of abuse in 2 states kills self

(AP) ? A Franciscan friar accused of sexually abusing students at Catholic high schools in Ohio and Pennsylvania killed himself at a western Pennsylvania monastery, police said Saturday.

Brother Stephen Baker, 62, was found dead of self-inflicted wounds at the St. Bernardine Monastery in Hollidaysburg on Saturday morning, Blair Township Police Chief Roger White told the Associated Press. He declined to specify the type of wounds or say whether a note was found.

Baker was named in legal settlements last week involving 11 men who alleged that he sexually abused them at a Catholic high school in northeast Ohio three decades ago. The undisclosed financial settlements announced Jan. 16 involved his contact with students at John F. Kennedy High School in Warren, Ohio from 1986-90.

The Youngstown diocese previously said it was unaware of the allegations until nearly 20 years after the alleged abuse.

"Let us continue to pray for all victims of abuse, for Brother Baker's family and the repose of his soul," Youngstown Bishop George Murray said in a statement Saturday.

After the settlements were announced, the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese in central Pennsylvania said it received complaints in 2011 of possible abuse by Baker at Bishop McCort High School in Johnstown, about 60 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Bishop McCort High School hired an attorney to investigate after several former students alleged they were molested by Baker in the 1990s. Attorney Susan Williams said three former students had talked to her in detail about the alleged abuse.

Baker taught and coached at John F. Kennedy High School in the late 1980's and early 1990's and was at Bishop McCort from 1992-2000.

Bishop Mark Bartchak of the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese said in a statement that he was saddened by the news of Baker's death, but declined further comment citing pending legal action involving the diocese.

A message left for Father Patrick Quinn, the head of Baker's order, the Third Order Regular Franciscans, was not immediately returned.

Judy Jones, assistant Midwest director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, said the organization still hopes people who know about other abuse allegations against Baker will continue to come forward.

"We feel sad for Br. Baker's family but even sadder for the dozens of boys who Baker assaulted," she said in a statement.

?We Are Supposed To Be Truth Tellers?

Image (1) cnetcbs.png for post 17592A couple of weeks ago CNET was put into an absurd situation – they could not favorably cover a technology product because the company behind that product was in litigation with CNET’s parent company, CBS. I wasn’t all that interested in the story at the time. Reporters and bloggers are constantly pressured to write or not write about things by parent companies and even business executives in their own companies. CBS telling CNET what it could and could not write about wasn’t anything I haven’t seen before. I understand why CBS was trying to control messaging about a company that they were suing, although they certainly weren’t very smart about how they handled it. The Streisand Effect kicked in and not only did the product end up getting tons of extra positive press, but both CBS and CNET looked like idiots. Still, big companies do stupid things all the time. It’s a big part of why small startups are often so successful at disrupting them. What I don’t get is why CNET staffers have stuck around. They’re the ones who are supposed to be journalists and all that entails. They’re the ones I blame right now. I blame them because they’re the only reason CBS is able to get away with this. Every single journalist at CNET should have resigned by now. More than once at TechCrunch we made AOL extremely uncomfortable with things that we wrote. But they never ordered us to write or not write about something because they understood that not only would we not comply, we’d write a post about how the whole thing. Our independence from AOL was so important to me that I negotiated an extremely odd provision in our purchase agreement that allowed me to disclose confidential information about AOL. It was their job never to give me that information. It was not my job to protect it in any way. If AOL had ever ordered me to remove a piece of content from the site for any reason I would have immediately written about it and disclosed the situation to our readers. And if I had ever ordered a writer to remove content I would have expected that writer to have done the same to me. In fact, one of the things I am most proud about at TechCrunch is the culture of independence in its writers. Many times I have been

Google's Private Cell Phone Network Could Be a Threat to Cellular ...

Filings made with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission reveal that Google wants to start operating its own, very small cell phone network on its Mountain View campus. It?s the latest in a series of hints in recent years that Google is unsatisfied with the way that mobile networks control the mobile Internet.

Google tells the FCC?it wants to install up to 50 mobile base stations in buildings on the Western edge of Google?s Mountain View campus, just a block or so away from its main Android building. Up to 200 mobile devices will be used on that ?experimental? network and the area covered will be small, with indoor base stations reaching only up to 200 meters, and any outdoors ones reaching no further than a kilometer. The WSJ reports that the frequencies used belong to ClearWire, and aren?t compatible with any U.S. mobile device. They are in use in China, Brazil, and India, though.

Google might just be experimenting with devices for those parts of the world. Or it might be trying something more radical. The search and ad giant has been rumored to be exploring the idea of working with TV provider Dish to launch a wireless Internet service, has already got into the business of providing broadband (see ?Google?s Internet Service Might Bring the U.S. Up to Speed?), and has a history of showing interest in ideas that would loosen the grip of cellular providers on mobile devices and what people can do with them.

Google lobbied U.S. regulators to encourage them to open up unused TV spectrum into so-called ?white spaces,? as they did in 2009, allowing that portion of the airwaves to be used by any company or device rather than being? licensed exclusively to one company (see ?Super Wi-Fi?). In 2008, the company filed a patent for an idea that would appall mobile networks?having mobile devices automatically hop to the cheapest cell network in an area rather than being locked to just one provider at all times.

Google?s biggest strike against the way wireless networks work today came in 2010 and was something of a flop. The company tried to break the U.S. convention of new mobile phones being tied to carrier contracts, only offering the flagship Nexus One smartphone online and unlocked. That experiment lasted only about six months, after Google struggled to cope with customer service requests and learned that U.S. consumers are apparently happier paying a significant markup for a device over two years than a smaller sum upfront.

Google has since played more nicely with cellular networks. Yet the relationships are still fraught, with fallings out over Google?s contactless payments system (blocked on Verizon handsets) and Android?s tethering function (also blocked by some carriers). It?s too early to know whether Google?s private cell phone network in Mountain View will add to that drama, but mobile networks are surely watching closely.

Financial aid FAQs - Collegewise

Here are ten of the most common questions I get about financial aid and scholarships, and my answers to each.

1. Should we bother to apply if we don?t think we?ll qualify?

Probably, but here?s the litmus test.? If a family cannot write a check for the full cost of their student?s college education next year, they should apply for financial aid.?? Many people who think they won't qualify actually do.? And some schools may require students to complete the FAFSA for merit scholarships.? You have nothing to lose but the time you spend filling out the forms, which isn?t inconsequential, but it?s less risky than forgoing available financial aid by not applying.

2.? Will applying for financial aid hurt my student?s chances of getting in?

No.? First of all, it?s important to remember that just because you apply for aid doesn?t? mean you?ll get any.? So if you?re in the position of debating whether or not to apply for aid, the chances are that while you may get some aid, it won?t be a large enough amount to ever be held against you.? Still, applying for aid has no negative impact at most schools.? Many colleges are ?need-blind? which means that the admissions officers don?t know whether or not you need aid.? And even at schools that are not need-blind, the admissions office wants who they want.? They see it as their job to pick the right students for the freshman class, while the financial aid office?s job is to decide whether or not those kids get aid.?

3. At what parental income level is it not worth it for a family even to complete a FAFSA?

There is no cut off because there are so many other factors considered (number in the family, student income, assets, number of children in college, cost of attendance, etc.).?? So again, use the litmus test.? If you can't write a check for the entire cost of attendance for the coming year, you should apply for aid.? Use one of the previously mentioned calculators and see if you qualify.

4. What if we know we can pay without aid?? Can that help our student get in?

It can at some colleges, particularly at less competitive private schools.? Most applications will ask if you?re going to be applying for financial aid.? Checking ?No? tells them that you are full-pay.? And if you know you?re capable of paying comfortably without any assistance, you likely wouldn?t have qualified for financial aid anyway.

5. Can a student establish residency at an out-of-state public university and then pay in-state tuition?

In the past, yes.? But in recent years, it has become almost impossible unless the entire family moves out of state.? If you couldn?t afford, or wouldn?t want to pay for, out-of-state tuition, attending an out-of-state college could be a risky thing to do.?? Don?t count on getting in-state residence.

6. What if parents are divorced or separated?? Which parent?s financial information will be used?

The parent with whom the child resided most during the 12 months prior to completing the aid application is called the ?Custodial parent??that?s the parent who completes the FAFSA.? Federal guidelines say that it is the custodial parent whose financial information will be used to determine the parental contribution to college.? It?s important to remember that the custodial parent may not necessarily be the parent who was initially awarded custody in the divorce settlement.?? It is all based on who the kid lived with during the base year.

The aid formula also considers a stepparent who lives with the custodial parent as a natural parent.??? That means the financial aid formula doesn?t distinguish between biological parents and step-parents?it only cares which parent, or parents, the student lived with most during the first base income year.

Most colleges will never ask to see income or asset information from a non-custodial parent.? The FAFSA has no questions about non-custodial parents, and while the PROFILE form asks a few questions, the processor does not take this information into account in providing the EFC.?? On the other hand, if you receive child support or alimony, it will appear as your income.?

7. Can my student declare independence from her parents while she?s in college, and therefore, get more financial aid?

If the college decides that a student is no longer a dependent of his parents, then the college won?t assess the parents? income and assets at all.? But it?s the federal government and the colleges themselves who get to decide who is dependent and who is independent, and it is obviously in their best interest to decide that the student is still dependent.? Don?t get your hopes up.? Most kids who are considered independent are foster kids, or kids who have been legally declared independent from their parents.

8. Is it possible to negotiate with a financial aid office to get more aid?

Sometimes it is.? If it looks like you might not be able to send your student to a school she really wants to attend because of money, or if two similarly ranked colleges offered very dissimilar packages, you might consider calling and asking the financial aid office to reconsider its offer.? However, if you can comfortably afford what the college has determined that you must pay, then there is little chance a college will change its aid package.? You?re not buying a used car here. Financial aid officers aren?t likely to do anything that feels like haggling.? But I?ve seen it work. There are times when making that call can lead to a good outcome, especially if the two schools compete for the same applicants, and if the offers are very different. Approach this like a civil business discussion. Leave your emotions out of it.? Be polite and respectful. If there are substantial differences between the two awards, the college will probably ask to see a copy of the other award.? Offer to provide any additional documentation that might be helpful. And always thank the person no matter what the outcome.

9. What's the best way to find scholarships?

There's no need to pay to find outside scholarships.? The best search sources are available for free at finaid.org and scholarships.com.?

Having said that, I meet a lot of families who have the impression there is oodles of money available from outside or private scholarships. These are little-known awards from private companies, foundations, community organizations, churches and other benefactors. There is money to be had from those sources, and they may be worth applying for, but you won?t likely get a free ride from outside scholarships alone.

The best way to get scholarships is to apply to colleges that may pay.? Financial aid offices earmark a certain percentage of money every year just to lure academically appealing students. This practice is called preferential packaging, and it?s not a dirty secret.?? The better the fit between you and a college, the more likely that school will entice you to attend.

10. Can applying early decision hurt my chances of receiving financial aid?

Yes.? Under a binding early decision plan, colleges don?t have as much incentive to entice you with unsolicited aid because you?re bound to attend if they take you.? And if you?re accepted early decision, you give up the chance to compare offers of financial aid from other colleges.

Why A Good Night's Sleep Can Save Your Relationship | YourTango

Sleep deprived couple
Cuddle up and catch up on those z's!

A new study suggests that sleep-deprived couples don't take the time to thank each other.

We have more than enough reasons to get a good night's sleep: improved memory, weight loss, less stress, the list goes on and on. But did you know that without catching enough z?s, your love life could also suffer?

That's according to a new study conducted by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, which suggests that sleep deprivation can make it harder for tired couples to value each other. So if you're feeling less than appreciated by your significant other, it may be because they aren't getting enough sleep.

More from YourTango: Is Facebook Turning Us Into Relationship Braggers?

"Poor sleep may make us more selfish as we prioritize our own needs over our partner's," said Amie Gordon, a UC Berkeley psychologist and lead investigator of the study. "You may have slept like a baby, but if your partner didn't, you'll probably both end up grouchy."

Over 60 couples, ranging in ages, participated in the study. In one experiment, participants kept a diary of their sleep patterns and whether they saw effects of their sleep in how they appreciated their significant other. In another experiment, couples were asked to complete problem-solving tasks together. The results from both of these experiments proved that poor sleepers had a harder time valuing their partners.

We all know that sharing a bed with a significant other sometimes means sleepless nights whether it's his obnoxious snoring or her late night cookie-munching (and you waking up in crumbs). But it's been proven that how the two of you go to bed at night can dictate your relationship during the day.

So what's the big takeaway here for couples? Get some shut-eye and your relationship will get up on the right side of the bed in the morning! And right before you climb into bed, take the time to let your boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife, whoever, "thank you."

More from YourTango: Contest: What's The Name Of Your Love-Life Movie?

Gordon says it pretty simply, "Make sure to say to say 'thanks' when your partner does something nice. Let them know you appreciate them."

How do you and your partner deal with sleep deprivation?

Public trust in government, business leaders falls

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? Public trust in business, government and media leaders has fallen in the wake of financial and political scandals, according to a new global survey.

Heads of financial institutions did particularly poorly, mainly in richer countries that have suffered financial crises and fined banks for, among other things, manipulating markets and facilitating money-laundering.

The 2013 edition of the annual Edelman Trust Barometer found "a very significant crisis of leadership," said Richard Edelman, president and CEO of Chicago-based public relations firm Edelman. "Leaders are just not seen as leading."

A big problem is that people think their leaders "just can't get around to telling them the truth," he said.

As a result, people are increasingly looking to other sources of information for the straight story about what's going on, such as academic experts or even their peers through social media and the Internet.

Edelman said one of the glaring results of the annual survey, released ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, was that while 50 percent respondents trusted business in general to do what is right, only 18 percent trusted business leaders to tell the truth ? a 32-percentage point gap between the institution itself and the people in charge. Government didn't look much better, with 41 percent trusting government to do what's right but only 13 percent believing what

The overall share of people expressing trust in basic institutions rose in the survey from the 2012 edition, to 57 percent from 51 percent, as trust bounced back from the hit it took from the European debt crisis and disputes between President Barack Obama and Republicans in Congress over the U.S. debt limit, which caused the U.S. to losing its top credit rating. Yet while institutions were recovering some lost trust, the view of the leaders of those institutions remained sour.

Edelman suggested that the result may have been influenced by prominent corporate political and financial scandals ? the investigation into alleged rigging by big banks of the London Interbank Offered Rate, an important interest rate benchmark, insider trading cases in the United States and Britain, and the scandal surrounding Chinese politician Bo Xilai, who faces trial on corruption charges.

Leaders' truthfulness score in the survey was "pretty pathetic," Edelman told the Associated Press in an interview.

The survey measured rising levels of trust for non-government organizations. "The trust is now being placed in an expert, such as an academic, or in a peer ? someone, your friends on Facebook, or whoever," he said. "The crisis of leadership is leading to people having a very different view of who they may listen to."

The online survey queried 31,000 people in 26 countries, and broke down results between the general population and a smaller sample of university-educated, higher income people dubbed members of the "informed public." It was conducted Nov. 10-15, so it preceded the many December news stories about whether Obama and Congress would agree on a budget deal to avoid the so-called 'fiscal cliff' of automatic tax increases and spending cuts on New Year's day. As it turned out, the two sides agreed on some issues and postponed others for two months.

Among the informed public group, 69 percent viewed an academic or expert as a credible spokesperson, while 61 percent looked to "a person like yourself." CEOs lagged at 43 percent among this group.

The most trusted business sector was technology, with a 77 percent credibility rate, while banks and financial services trailed with 50 percent ? just behind the news media, which polled 53 percent.

The nine-hour assault on the traffic police headquarters, which sent heavy black smoke rising over Kabul, was the second such attack in the heart of the snow-covered capital in six days.

It came a week after the Afghan and American presidents agreed that the?Taliban?should open a political office in the Gulf state of Qatar to facilitate possible reconciliation with the hardline Islamic group. And it occurred just days after Pakistan announced it would release more?Taliban?detainees to help jumpstart the fragile peace process.

The pre-dawn attack began with two?Taliban?suicide bombers blowing themselves up at the gates of the police headquarters. Three heavily armed militants, also wearing explosive vests, then stormed the compound, authorities said.

About 90 minutes later, a car packed with explosives blew up near the gate. Such secondary explosive devices often are rigged to timers and designed to kill people responding to the attack.

The three militants who entered the compound battled Afghan security forces for nine hours. Three policemen were killed, said Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi. Four traffic policemen and 10 civilians were wounded, he said.

Kabul Police Chief Gen. Mohammad Ayub Salangi said two suicide bombers died at the gate when they detonated their explosive vests, another blew himself up inside the building, and two more were shot and killed by security forces before they managed to detonate their suicide vests.

Taliban?spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack, which he said targeted a police training facility "run by foreign military forces."

The traffic police headquarters is not heavily guarded, though it is located on a square leading to the parliament and close to a zoo. It also is adjacent to the Afghan Border Police headquarters and a police training facility ? possibly the insurgents' primary target. The traffic police facility, usually teeming with civilians seeking driver's licenses and vehicle registrations, was nearly empty when the attack began before the morning rush hour.

The Interior Ministry said many of the civilians were injured by the powerful car bomb. Some were in their homes and hit by shattered pieces of glass.

About two hours after the fighting ended, residents ventured out of their homes and shopkeepers arrived at the scene to see if their stores had been damaged. Two photo shops where people had driver's license pictures taken were nearly reduced to rubble. The explosions created a crater in the cement wall of the traffic police compound. Broken glass littered the street. One man shoveled shards into a wheelbarrow outside his damaged shop.

"We just stayed inside, waiting for it to end," said Fida Mohammad, who works at the Finance Ministry and lives just a few houses from the scene.

He said he was awakened by the explosions and car bombing. He and his family were not hurt, but a woman from a neighboring house was hit by a stray bullet, he said.

An Associated Press reporter at the scene said that during the fight a number of large explosions could be heard inside and around the building, along with heavy gunfire.

On Wednesday, six?Taliban?suicide bombers attacked the gates of the Afghan intelligence service in downtown Kabul, killing one guard and wounding dozens. That operation bore several similarities to Monday's attack, including the use of a secondary car bomb placed outside the government compound.

The attacks occurred despite the Afghan government's push to get the?Taliban?to the negotiating table and as President Hamid Karzai and the US negotiate for a quicker pullout of American forces.

After a meeting with Karzai earlier this month in Washington, President Barack Obama said the US-led military coalition would hand over the lead for security around the country to Afghan forces this spring ? months ahead of schedule. Obama also said he agreed with Karzai that the?Taliban?should open a political office in Qatar to facilitate peace talks.

Moreover, Pakistan, a powerbroker in the region, said last week that it plans to release more Afghan militant detainees before international troops finish their drawdown in Afghanistan at the end of 2014. Islamabad made the announcement after talks with Afghan and U.S. officials in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Pakistan is thought to be holding more than 100?Taliban?prisoners and has so far released 26.

Kabul has pressed hard for Pakistan to release Afghan detainees, with some officials saying that they hope the released?Taliban?can serve as intermediaries to help prospective talks gain traction. But Washington is worried that some of the detainees might rejoin the fight if released.

Conn. priest indicted in cross-country meth drug ring

By LeAnne Gendreau, NBCConnecticut.com

A former Connecticut priest who was charged in a federal crystal meth case sold the drug out of his Waterbury apartment, as well as the parking lot of an adult specialty store and smoke shop that he bought in the fall, according to court documents.?

Investigators believe that Msg. Kevin Wallin, 61, bought the store with drug proceeds and might have intended to use it to launder drug money, according to the complaint.

Drug Enforcement Agents in New Haven started investigating Wallin in July 2012 after New York drug investigators contacted them to look into a Connecticut-based drug trafficker distributing crystal meth in the tri-state are.

In September, New York authorities again contacted local officials and identified Wallin as a suspect in the distribution ring.

Between September 2012 and January 2013, an undercover officer bought crystal meth from Wallin six times, according to federal officials, and determined that Wallin sold drugs to users as well as distributors.

Read more on NBCConnecticut.com.

The documents released on Thursday state that the priest had a large resealable bag filled with crystal meth, a safe in his apartment that contained a large quantity and cash and drug packaging materials that included color-coded resealable bags.

Officials also charged Kenneth Devries, 52, of Waterbury, with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.

Devries lived in an apartment in the same building as Wallin. According to court documents, Wallin paid his rent and the man would allegedly run the drug operation when Wallin was away.???

Officials also charged Michael Nelson, 40, from Manchester; Chad McCluskey, 43, from San Clemente, Calif.; and Kristen Laschober, 47, from Laguna Niguel, Calif..

McCluskey and Laschober are accused of supplying the drugs to Wallin, and court documents indicate that almost $20,000 worth of crystal meth passed between them between August and December.????

The complaint also mentions that Wallin spent some time in drug rehabilitation last fall after his employer ordered him.

Wallin resigned as pastor of Bridgeport's St. Augustine Parish in June 2011 after nine years.?

According to the Diocese of Bridgeport, Wallin told parishioners "that he was struggling with a number of health and personal issues" and he was granted a sabbatical.

"During his sabbatical, the Diocese became concerned about Msgr. Wallin's well-being and have continued to reach out to him," the diocese wrote in a statement. "To date, he has not spoken directly with diocesan officials."

Find The Information You Need For Commercial Real Estate ...

TIP! Don?t become greedy and over-inflate your real estate asking price. There are a ton of variables when it comes to what will give you success.

When you are the owner of some commercial property, it is very fulfilling, but it takes hard work. It can be quite intimidating, and leave you wondering how to even start organizing the things that have to be accounted for. Learning all the things you have to about being the owner of a commercial property might be hard, but this article will get you going in the right direction to buy some commercial property!

TIP! Focus on only one investment at the same time. For example, when starting out decide if you are going to invest in apartment complexes, office building, commercial land, or retail spaces.

When you?re on the market to buy commercial real estate, keep an eye out for properties slightly larger than what you originally had in mind. It doesn?t take a lot more work than a smaller location, and it turns a greater profit over time.

TIP! When buying rental properties, avoid the difficulties involved with smaller properties. Experienced investors advise buying complexes with over 10 units.

Consider any tax deductions you might get from your commercial real estate investment. In addition to depreciation benefits, investors can receive interest deductions. Other investors deal largely with ?phantom income? ? income that is not paid in cash, yet is still taxed. You should know about this income before you make a investment.

TIP! Add a blog to your website to develop your good reputation. This can help you find people to buy what you have for sale or even those who will lease space.

Itis customary for the borrower to arrange for the appraisal on a commercial loan. It is not unusual for the bank financing your investment to refuse to accept any other appraisal. Order it yourself to ensure everything goes as planned.

TIP! Do your research so you know ahead of time if you will have issues with the environment surrounding your property. As owner, you will have to clean up any environmental problems the building may have.

There are a lot of different kinds of real estate agents. Agents that work with tenants and landlords both are called full service brokers. There are also agents that only represent tenants. If you are a tenant, you may be much better off by using a broker who only works with tenants as they have a lot more experience with successful tenant representation.

TIP! Use your digital camera to take pictures of the property. The picture needs to show defects like carpet spots, wall holes, or discolored sinks and tubs.

You will be a successful investor if you spend enough time and work hard enough to find the best deal possible and get your property ready. You will also need to stick with it and not give up. Keeping the aforementioned tips in mind, you are well on your way to owning a nice piece of commercial property.

Slower growth of preterm infants linked to altered brain development

Jan. 16, 2013 ? Preterm infants who grow more slowly as they approached what would have been their due dates also have slower development in an area of the brain called the cerebral cortex, report Canadian researchers in a new study published January 16 in Science Translational Medicine.

The cerebral cortex is a two to four millimetre layer of cells that envelopes the top part of the brain and is involved in cognitive, behavioural, and motor processes.

Researchers analyzed MRI brain scans of 95 preterm infants born eight to 16 weeks too early at BC Women's Hospital & Health Centre between 2006 and 2009. Infants were scanned soon after birth and a second time close to what would have been their due date, the ninth month of pregnancy. These MRI scans allowed researchers to measure the pattern of water movement inside the brain, which normally changes between scans as the brain matures. The researchers also assessed the babies' weight, length, and head size. They found that preterm infants with slower growth had delayed development in the cerebral cortex compared to those infants who grew more quickly between scans.

"These results are an exciting first step because understanding the importance of growth in relation to the brain in these small babies may eventually lead to new discoveries that will help us optimize their brain development," says Dr. Steven Miller, the study's co?lead. Dr. Miller is head of neurology at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), the Bloorview Children's Hospital Chair in Paediatric Neuroscience, professor in the department of Paediatrics at the University of Toronto, affiliate professor in the department of Pediatrics at the University of British Columbia (UBC), and affiliate investigator at the Child & Family Research Institute (CFRI) at BC Children's Hospital. He led the study with Dr. Ruth Grunau, a professor in the UBC Department of Pediatrics and CFRI senior scientist.

"More research needs to be done to understand what is the optimal growth rate for the brain development of these babies," says Jillian Vinall, the study's first author and a UBC PhD student cosupervised by Dr. Grunau and Dr. Miller.

"We're especially grateful to the families for their generous and ongoing participation in this study," says Dr. Miller. The researchers are following the babies through childhood to understand how preterm brain development is associated with their neurodevelopment outcomes.

Myrlie Evers-Williams Talks About Upcoming Inaugural Invocation

(RNS) Myrlie Evers-Williams, 79, the widow of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers, will be the first laywoman to give an invocation at a presidential inauguration when she prays at President Obama's swearing-in on Jan. 21.

The author, civil rights and political activist and former NAACP chairman is a scholar at Alcorn State University in Mississippi.

She talked with Religion News Service about the upcoming confluence of events: the second inauguration of the nation's first African-American president, the 50th anniversary of her husband's death in June 1963, and the swearing-in occurring on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Q: What was your reaction when you were chosen to give the invocation at President Obama's second inauguration?

A: First of all, it's a major honor to do that. Secondly it had been years ago at the March on Washington when I was scheduled to be a speaker there and unfortunately I could not get there. That was one thing that has haunted me over the years. Fifty years later, I receive an invitation to deliver the invocation.

Q: How do you feel about this occurring on the 50th anniversary of the murder of your husband, who was very active in civil rights work?

A: The focus has been on Dr. King and there certainly is nothing wrong with that at all. But I have always wanted to see Medgar be recognized for what he did. Medgar's remains are in Arlington Cemetery, only about four to five miles away from the spot where the inauguration will take place. It's kind of a miracle for me that all of this is happening at this particular time.

Q: What does it mean to you that President Obama is using King's Bible to take the oath of office on Martin Luther King Day?

A: How can a country become more historical than that? I think it speaks so highly to America's strength and willingness to change even though it has taken years to bring about efforts from the civil rights struggle into fruition and we are not yet there. But it sends a symbol not only to America, with all of those things combined, but to the world that America is strong, that America does believe in equality for all.

Q: Did you ever imagine as you worked with your husband Medgar Evers on civil rights that one day there would be a black president?

A: Of course, we all knew, we hoped, we worked, we prayed that one day there would be a man or a woman of African-American descent who would become the president of the United States of America. That has been a dream come true but if we look at the politics leading up to particularly his second term, there were blocks that came during this time of getting people to register and to vote that are reminiscent of some of those actions that took place 50 years ago to keep people of my race and others away from the polls.

Q: You are the first laywoman to give the invocation, following in the footsteps of many clergy. Are you feeling just a little bit of pressure?

A: Yes and no. Yes because there are so many people who will be watching and making a decision as to whether I have done a good job or not. There will be critics, I'm sure, and there will be people who will applaud not only my presence but what I will say.

Q: Do you have any idea what you will pray for yet?

A: I hope to express feelings that are true, that are honest, that are open and maybe a wee bit insightful in terms of what is happening in America today and in the world as a whole.

Q: What is your religious affiliation?

A: I have been Baptist, I have been Methodist, I have been Presbyterian. I have attended all of those churches depending on where I have lived in my life.

Q: Do you have any thoughts about the Rev. Louie Giglio stepping down from the inaugural program?

A: I'm simply delighted that I was not so controversial that I would step down or be asked to step down.

Q: Have you ever prayed in public before?

A. I have been on the lecture circuit since the day Medgar was assassinated. I delivered my first speech that night. I have never been shy in mentioning my relationship with what I call God, a Spirit, and there certainly have been times over the years that I have called on him -- or her, if you wish -- in public. I deeply believe that there is a Supreme Being that sees us through.

Q. At the inauguration you will be praying in public before a larger number of people than in the past. Are you OK with that?

A: Of course I am. To pray is nothing new. To pray in public is nothing new. But to pray in a setting where there will be thousands and thousands of people who will listen, I am asking for guidance. I am asking for direction and I am asking to, please God, help me stay within the three minutes that I have been given.

Apple shares are down 4 percent in morning trading, putting them below the $500 mark for the first time since February. The drop came after The Wall Street Journal reported the company has cut its orders for iPhone 5 components because of weaker-than-expected demand. The newspaper says two people it did not identify by name told it that Apple's first quarter orders for iPhone 5 screens have dropped to about half of what the company had previously planned to order.

Automatic GPS Toggles, Organized Downloads, and Hot Showers

Automatic GPS Toggles, Organized Downloads, and Hot ShowersReaders offer their best tips for toggling GPS before you navigate, organizing your downloads with Windows Libraries, and getting your shower temperature just right.

Every day we receive boatloads of great reader tips in our inbox, but for various reasons?maybe they're a bit too niche, maybe we couldn't find a good way to present it, or maybe we just couldn't fit it in?the tip didn't make the front page. From the Tips Box is where we round up some of our favorites for your buffet-style consumption. Got a tip of your own to share? Add it in the comments, email it to tips at lifehacker.com, or share it on our tips and expert pages.

Automatic GPS Toggles, Organized Downloads, and Hot Showers

Use Tasker to Toggle GPS Before you Navigate

Unionhawk comes up with a great use for Tasker:

Tired of opening your navigation app and not having GPS turned on? I just came up with Tasker task that fixes this. What it does is it checks to see if GPS is on. If it is, then all it does is open the navigation app. If it isn't on, it opens location settings and waits until it is on, before opening the navigation app. Here's what it contains:

Launch Navigation
A1: Location Settings If [ %GPS !~ On ]
A2: Wait Until [ MS:0 Seconds:5 Minutes:0 Hours:0 Days:0 ] If [ %GPS ~ On ]
A3: Load App [ App:Navigation Data: Exclude From Recent Apps:Off ]

The time in the "Wait Until" is the time between checks. It really doesn't matter that much in this case. I just picked 5.

See our guides to Tasker for more information on automating functions on your Android phone.

Automatic GPS Toggles, Organized Downloads, and Hot Showers

Use Windows Libraries to Organize Downloaded Files

Geekgirlbarbie keeps her files neat and organized:

Between my regular downloads folder, my normal "save all documents until I decide where they belong folder," and miscellaneous folders that I have this automatically saved to (Ifftt?>Dropbox, automatic downloads, etc.), going through on a weekly basis to decide to what to keep and what to get rid of was becoming a pain in the ass.

So, I created a new Windows library called "Dumping Ground" and included all of the aforementioned folders.

Now when it's time to go through and determine what to keep, I just open up that library and all the folders I need to go through are right there with one click.

Automatic GPS Toggles, Organized Downloads, and Hot Showers

Use Tape to Mark Your Optimal Shower Temperature

James Sinclair shares a tip for finicky showers:

I have one of those showers with separate knobs for hot and cold water. It's very sensitive to slight turns of the knobs, but also slow to react, which is of course an extremely frustrating combination.

So, one day, I adjusted the water until the temperature was about right, and then put a narrow strip of duct tape along the top of the cold water knob (as seen in the picture). Now, all we have to do is turn the hot water knob all the way and turn the cold water knob until the strip of tape is on top, which saves who-knows-how-much time, water, and mental energy.

Use Paper Clips to Hang Spare Glasses

Kyle keeps his glasses up and out of the way:

Thought I'd share a housekeeping tip I came up with over the holidays. To keep 3D glasses (passive LGs in my case) out of view/the way, I took some paperclips then bent them into a S shape creating hooks. One end goes into the vent holes on the back of the TV and the other can be used to hang the glasses on. Really simple but I thought it might help some of the readers out.
