Placido Domingo leaves hospital after embolism

MADRID (AP) ? Opera singer Placido Domingo says he studied "Giovanna d'Arco" while being treated in a hospital for a blocked lung artery and hopes he will be able to sing at Salzburg this summer.

Domingo was released from a hospital in Madrid on Saturday and said he planned to attend a piano dress rehearsal of Daniel Catan's "Il Postino" in Madrid on Sunday night.

"I am very happy that I was released from the hospital yesterday and to be at home in Madrid for the next weeks with my family," he said in a statement sent to The Associated Press on Sunday by his representative, Nancy Seltzer. "At the same time I am very disappointed not to be able to perform in my home city, but hopefully if my recovery goes well and I feel healthy, I can continue with my planned performance schedule next month. "

He planned to speak to reporters at the "Il Postino" rehearsal.

Domingo's representative released details about his plans as he continues to recover from the pulmonary embolism.

In addition to appearance at the Salzburg Festival in Austria, he hopes to keep engagements in Verona, Italy, where he will sing and to conduct Operalia, the world opera competition.

The hospitalization forced him to cancel a handful of appearances, including the "Il Postino" series of shows at Teatro Real in Madrid.

On Saturday Domingo wrote "Going home" on his Twitter account, attaching a photograph of him opening a car door. Nicholas Marko, a personal assistant to Domingo, confirmed to the AP that the singer had left the hospital.

Alvaro Domingo, the tenor's son, said he expects his father to spend three weeks recuperating in Madrid, and that the 72-year-old singer isn't contemplating retirement.

Domingo, who is renowned for a vigorous work schedule, canceled six dates in Madrid this month, where he was to have sung the lead role in "Il Postino," after being hospitalized Monday.

Doctors said a blood clot caused the pulmonary embolism.

Domingo has maintained an active schedule since recovering from colon cancer surgery in 2010.
