Many Still Suffering from Long-Term Side Effects of Fen-Phen |

Pharmaceuticals are a billion-dollar industry in the United States where there is a "miracle pill" for any condition or ailment. People want to look better, feel better, and be healthier, and many look to over-the-counter or prescription medications to achieve those results. For this reason, weight-loss medications are one of the biggest money-making drugs around; and one of the most infamous ?fad? weight-loss drugs is Fen-Phen.

Fen-Phen Hits the Market

Fen-Phen, or Fenfluramine/Phentermine, took the weight-loss market by storm in the 1990s with its promises and results. The combination of Fenfluramine and Phentermine as Fen-Phen was much more productive in terms of weight-loss than the two short-term diet aids alone. Although the doctor in charge of the four-year study of the new drug looked for side effects, he determined that serious ones did not exist. Unfortunately, he did not look in the right place. In 1992, Fen-Phen was on the market, and in 1997 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began receiving reports of Fen-Phen users developing serious and potentially fatal conditions, including:

  • Severe heart valve damage;
  • Cardiac valvulopathy; and/or
  • Primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH)

The FDA took Fen-Phen off the market in 1997 after having received over 100 reports of serious side effects. Unfortunately, those who had already developed these conditions would be left with the symptoms of those conditions, potentially for the rest of their lives.
