UNDATED (WHDH) -- After a 10-month battle against bone cancer, an 18-year-old cancer survivor is fulfilling his dream: he?s going to the London Olympics.
?As a kid, I always watched the Olympics. Growing up I would sneak under my parents? bed and watch it from there,? Morales said.
Fernando Morales' childhood dream -- a trip to the Olympics -- is coming true.
?It would really be cool if I could just meet any of the athletes ?cause they?re just training their whole lives for this one moment,? Morales said.
A moment -- thanks to Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island -- he hopes will replace the year cancer took from his life.
?My big thing is soccer. Me playing soccer when I was healthy. Hoping to get back out there. Be better than before,? Morales said.
While playing soccer last year, Fernando had a nagging pain in his knee. He only imagined muscle soreness. It turned out to be bone cancer. And what followed were 10 months of body-ravaging treatments.
?The radiation made it so I was getting infections all the time,? Morales said.
That was five months ago. Now Fernando?s signature raccoon hat he wore for treatments is gone.
The 18-year-old now in remission is already back to kicking around the soccer ball with his dad. And what he shares with the Olympians he hopes to meet is their spirit.
?When it comes to treatment, the medicine can only take you so far. I just have a positive spirit ?cause what?s the point of being down? I only have one life and I need to enjoy it,? Morales said.
Morales leaves for London on Wednesday.
